Seeing how much talent you have
what are ways of seeing how much talent you have without spending a lot of money?

There aren't any I'm afraid. It there was, it would make finding talented drivers a lot easier and cheaper for professional teams.
You might currently be utterly talentLESS, but have such a capacity and right physiology that you are the next Lewis Hamilton. Or you might be as good as Hamilton was in karts, but be at your personal limit and will never get even slightly better no matter how many millions you spend. The motorsport 'ladder' works, roughly, as such: You kart, at your own expense. If you're any good and can afford it, you move into cars. If you are any good at karts, you might get a few hundred quid in sponsorship to help. If you're good at the first stage of cars, you move up a category, possibly helped by sponsors. You keep moving up if you're any good versus the opposition. Sponsors might come (if you're good or can make them money) or go (if you crash, are slow, argue, represent them badly, or if they find a better person to sponsor). At any point you might run out of ability. You might find you are THE BEST at Formula Ford the world has EVER seen. But put you in a Formula Renault or Formula Three and you might get lapped in two laps. You don't know. The teams don't know. That's why you pay them, and not vice versa. All heavily simplified of course (and downright inaccurate actually, but on purpose to get the point across). Any one who works at an arrive-and-drive kart centre is the WRONG person to judge your ability. |

"Racing Schools" are all but dead in the UK, but you can still come over to the USA and Canada at a reasonable cost and do a 3-5 day formula school with a reputable school like Skip Barber, Russell or Bridgestone Racing School. It should be glaring obvious what your abilities might be and where you stand. A lot of people can become quite good after a lot of work at it. Some are natural talents that pick it up right away. And others just are not cut out for it at all or find the fantasy wasn't the reality and at the end of the day it wasn't for them.

Adam, PM sent.
Gordon, the difference in th Z Factor is that there the talentless qualify simply by standing in a line at auditions. In motor sport you actually have to pay for the privilege. |
