Odds

Melbourne GP to win... Ladbrokes. (Ladbrokes were the first to offer race odds, that I have seen).

M Schumacher _4/6
R Barrichello _3/1
D Coulthard _8/1
JP Montoya _10/1
K Raikkonen _10/1
R Schumacher _12/1
J Trulli _40/1
J Villeneuve _80/1
F Alonso _100/1
G Fisichella _100/1
HH Frentzen _100/1
J Button _100/1
M Webber _100/1
N Heidfeld _100/1
O Panis _100/1
A Pizzonia _150/1
C Da Matta _150/1
R Firman _150/1
J Verstappen _500/1
J Wilson _500/1

They haven't offered podium or points odds yet - they usually do - but I reckon one of the Toyotas might pull a surprise and finish well... mind you I never do better than break even over the course of the season. I would have had a big win last year if Button hadn't had that broken anti roll bar a couple of laps from podium finish at Sepang. If - F1 backwards as Murray was fond of saying.

I think they have got the top eight just about right. For myself, I picked Williams over McLaren in another competition, but I'm beginning to have second thoughts now. Panis could be a little better, but I am always a little too optimistic in his case.

I just looked at Ladbrokes to place a couple of bets each way. Betting on Alonso was suspended, don't know why, didn't plan to bet on him!

Funny thing about betting is that it doesn't really have much to do with "getting it about right". The odds are more influenced by what money goes to what bets. So - if a certain driver is the "housewives favourite" then that driver's odds will come in irrespective of the liklihod of a win.

Wonder what's going on with Alonso? He'd be a good bet for a podium - or more realistically points.

I think Alonso and Fisi are over-rated but we'll see soon enough... What odds on Panis and Button in the top 3 / 5?

Button and Panis are both 100/1. You get one fifth odds for each-way, which equates to one-tenth odds in reality, since one half of an each way bet is for the win (very unlikely). So you could bet £ 5 each way at 100/1, which would cost £ 10, and if they get on the podium you get £ 100 plus your stake back. If they win you get £ 200 plus your stake back.

Usually the bookamkers have prices for podiums, points, fastest lap, best of the rest (any team other than the big three) and loads more besides. probably be more prices nearer to the time.

when i was betting on sky bet last year i could get odds of 2000/1 on some drivers. surely its worth £1. At 100/1 buton will get a quid each way too. Big spender eh!

I think Panis and Alonso are good bets for an each way.

The trick is to find odds that are better than you think the chance is (obviously). There have been quite a lot of 2000-1s that I consider totally unrealistic and should be more like 2000000-1 !

The latest...

D Coulthard _10/1
K Raikkonen _12/1

McLaren odds have both gone out a little - in contrast to what many here seem to think about the quality of the McLaren car vs the Williams.
