Where did the Porsches go?
Something that just occured to me... Keep in mind I've only been aware of rallying for the past 3 years... But Porsche were very competitive in rallying right up to the introduction of all-wheel drive. So why are they such a rarity in national/regional 2WD classes? Just reading the SCCA's Group 5 rules, it seems a 3.0L 930 would be a perfect fit, much better than the Mustangs and RX7s which predominate.

Where did they go???? Targa Tasmania - a tarmac rally where Porsches (GT3 etc) seem to work quite well. I think that the 911 has grown a bit larger and heavier that the 60's, 70's and early 80's when they were competitive in the tight twisty European rally events, so maybe they wouldn't go so well in those type of events anymore.

Actually, it's success in the Targa Tasmania has had me thinking for a while. Seeing as the Targa is for Group N type vehicle's (ie..standard) why don't we see any of the Porsche's on any WRC rallies in Group N, they probably wouldn't be competitive on the loose, but in the Targa tassie they leave the Subaru WRX's and Mitsubishi Evo's for dead.

I think for FIA Group N you need a car that seats 4 adults.

Probably because today's Porsche models are outside FIA WRC, Group A and N rules...

The Porsche's potential was never realised in rallying. If the factory had taken some notice about how well teh cars went in private hands (eg..thr Prodrive Rothmans Porsche's) they could have won alot of rallies, particularly on the tarmac.
