Ex-HRT Director Joins #9
Interesting to read in the Australian Here that one time HRT director (and rated in the paddock as one of the key architects of some of the legal and contractual structures of that business) Jeff Browne has joined Eddie McGuire at #9 as Executive Director.
Mr Browne has a long standing relationship with the AFL (presumably where the relationship with Mr McGuire originated) however his now former legal practice is also a current GRM sponsor. It may mean that AVESCO/VESA has friends in extraordinaily high places at #9 when it comes time to negotiate their new television deal in the very near future.... |

Compromised
GTR, you seem to be suggesting Jeff Browne will not act solely in the best interests of his employer - no?
McGuire has long been accused of a conflict of interest (strenuously denied) in his involvement with Collingwood Football Club - does Browne have any current conflict ? |

Do not confuse Brownies PREVIOUS interest in touring cars as being a CURRENT interest.

I do not believe Browne & Co have lost interest at all. I do believe that Mr Browne is a close and personal friend of Mr McGuire.

Given the nature of the position of Mr Browne in the #9 structure as described in the ‘The Australian' article, it can be reasonably assumed that there will be some significant power in that role to “Yay” or “Nay” new programming, sports as well as regular entertainment. With a significant background in motorsport with the HRT/HMS involvement, and sponsorship of GRM for a number of years, Mr Browne would be well aware of the commercial and sporting intent of V8Supercars at a very detailed and intimate level. Where this is advantage is that if a television coverage proposal from VESA were to go to that level of management aboard #9, it will likely be a positive for V8Supercar to have someone who knows what the product is all about, understands the product, and doesn’t need to be convinced of all the intricacies of what happens in front of the cameras and the oddities behind the scenes. Given Mr Browne’s involvement in the AFL contractual relationships in recent years, it is also true that the same level of intimate knowledge would aid that sport as well should there be an opportunity to bid for the commercial television rights. That opportunity is locked out for a number of years as #10 and #7 have successfully bid for the broadcast rights from the AFL. In terms of understanding any conflict of interest on behalf of Mr Browne, I would have thought resigning from his legal practice of many years to move into the new #9 job would mean he is legally separated from any conflicts that may arise in this area. There are no conflicts I can see on the motorsport side, which was the point of raising this for discussion in the first place. Given Mr Cattach's clear message in AA this week, that there are more players in the potential new television deal than just #10, this is something worthy of some more discussion |
