Shanghai flop a future lesson
Gordon Lomas

March 30, 2006

V8 SUPERCAR powerbrokers have admitted they made the wrong call by dealing with a non-motorsport company in the failed Shanghai venture.

Quote:
Cattach said there was no intention to make V8 Supercars a truly international series but there was still a desire to have a maximum of four international races.

There are two, New Zealand and Bahrain, but Cattach says there has been a bit of talk about Hawaii which would seem to make about as much sense as the Shanghai debacle.

"We have said before we would do up to four races offshore and South-East Asia will continue to be an area of interest," he said.

"And there has been a bit of talk about Hawaii."

I can see it now. "The Pearl Harboour V8 Supercar Grand Prix", a real bomb and not a Japanese car in sight!

Vanilla Dice has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
And we get hula girls and leis instead of grid girls and garlands

Looks a lot like a track on a different island, only to the South.

I still think Ho Chi Minh City has to be a starter.

No Japanese cars because they are all in the carparks of the RSL clubs

Don't think they have RSLs in Hawaii.

Could be more of a case of which track would pay to have them rather than pick a track

Would this round be best served by having it as a mobile international event, rather than trying to lock it in on one circuit? As a one-off at each location you would get the novelty-factor benefit each year. If it turned out that one particular event worked particularly well, then something could be looked at long term....

And I know I'm dreaming with this one, but I would love to see V8SC, DTM, NASCAR, BTCC etc have an annual festival, where on one weekend a year they all rock up on one track somewhere and show off their stuff to the world. Silverstone, Nurburgring, Daytona, and Bathurst over 4 years?

I've thought they should do this locally too. A wildcard sprint round that can go to the likes of mallala, wakefield, baskerville etc.

Wow. Is there any motorsport fan in Australia that wouldn't go to that?

Me! Imagine how expensive it would be to get in the gate in having to pay the overinflated egodriven category management costs for 4 series run by people who believe their excrement has no aroma?

A $100 4 day general admission pass may be $400.. and a paddock pass would be a serious no no in DTM..

The no-paddock access thing for DTM could be good for V8SC - Assuming you let the "home" series use the main pit area, and put the other series use other "support paddock" type areas around the track, there would be no reason why you shouldn't be allowed to get into the V8 paddock - don't know about the others. But the more people that see the V8's close up, and get a chance to talk to the people involved etc, the more likely they are to develop a long term interest in it.... promoters might wonder "should I put on a DTM event where noone can get close, or a V8SC event where the people can get right up near the action?" (TC-bashing aside, you know what I mean)

Almost all the ads are a weird mismatch[so much for artificial intelligence]
BUT this one is not.Elvis is alive and well and has been waiting for the call
from MGM and V8SCA for one last dreadful movie. The King stars as Buck Testosterone Holden driver naturally who wins in Hawaii by punting Rick and Russell off and having the Mafia smack Jamie in the pits.Stars a giant cockroach as the promoter and Courtney as the one hit wonder.

Uncanny, similar to another thread about Bill and Grace hosting RPM with a add for Will and Grace DVD.
