Is Gilles Panizzi---
...a man with a temper? I watched the Rally XS last night and they had a rather extensive interview with him in which they seemed to say that he's a bit of a diva. Does anyone know if he's actually been seen chasing other drivers with mayhem on his mind, or doing a John McEnroe at the officials?

he and his brother were hit with a heavy fine a while back. They were stuck behind a privateer car on a gravel rally (could have been the safari - it was a hot rally). He would not let them past (probably could not see them in his dust as they were far to close for comfort). Anyway at the finish the panizzi brothers hopped out of their car, climbed into the other car and thumped the driver. - cost them a lot of thousande of dollars...

Didn't he hit his brother as well on one occasion? I'm sure they mentioned it on Eurosport.

I don't know about hitting, but I do remember the brothers having a lively discussion (on the verge of fistfight) about tire choice at the '99 Monte. He's a nervous fella, old Gilles!

He also inspires emotion in his team-mates; remember Francois Delecour confronting him re; cheating on the Corscia or San Remo rally in 2000.
I don't remember Herve getting involved in the Safari fracas though. |

Oh, I always thought that it was the co-driver of the guy thumped who leapt in through his door to help fend off Gilles; I must take a second look in super slo-mo.

According to an article I've read in one motorsports magazine, there is a clause in his contract saying that if he ever 'overreacts' his contract is terminated immidiatelly.

No, I think the temper has been mellowed by his success; no more angry young man (watch him go and thump somneone in Cyprus now......)

.... the real character of the WRC currently. Seeing him polishing the only unbent panel on his 206 as though he was really proud of his car, in the collection area after his roll was really good, as was him congratulating Alister on joining the roll-over club. (In fact with Hari and Colin doing the same I think they've got enough for a proper club now: 2002 Cyprus Club 180+)

They are all such characters aren't they? It's nice to have a good mix of guys.
I didn't even see Panizzi this trip. Where did he finish up? |
