Spa Francorchamps 9/10 July 2004

Mono Racers christen Spas new Bus Stop!

Thirty Mono drivers were the first competitors to try out the new "Bus Stop" chicane in anger when they started their wet first practice session for the Monoposto OnLine Landlord Challenge at Spa Francorchamps on 9th July. First impressions were that it added a new technical challenge to the circuit, slowing the exit from Blanchiment and requiring braking through the new right hand curve approach to the chicane proper. Many drivers commented on the lack of reference points in approach to the braking area.

If the first practice was wet, the second one, which counted for grid positions, was very wet! However the intrepid Mono racers relished the challenge of Francorchamps in torrential rain. The lists saw Jonathan Lewis on pole from Jim Blockley and James Jakes in his Mygale. Robin Dawe, Alan Everitt and Philipp Carter made up the remaining positions in the top six. Slightly further back it was clear that the wet conditions suited the lower powered cars with Gavin Mills and Jeremy Timms in their Mono 1600 cars and Jeff Fern in the Mono 1800 Van Diemen taking the scalps of many of the two litre cars.

The Belgian gods took pity on the Mono racers for the raceday dawned dry, and even bathed the paddock in a little sunshine, which gave us a dry rack for our race! After the unparalled experience of tackling Spa in the dry it was broad grins all round from those who completed the course with cars intact. The winner was Jonathan Lewis, with Jim Blockley and Neil Harrison next up. Mono 1200 Class winner was Bob Couchman from Adrian Wright. The Mono 1800 winner was Jeff Fern from Yodi Doyle and the Mono 1600 class was taken by Gavin Mills from Hugh Robertson and Peter Daly. No sooner had we returned to our trailers when it started to rain ……..!

There seem to be so many comparisons with Mono and F1 this season - Anglesey and Monaco where Schumacher lost are both by the sea and I have heard from a reliable source the J Lewis actually uses the cast off Schumacher engines in his van diemen - apparently it is a very easy fit just a few bolts and a twenty minute job...

Hahaha, I was very luckie as by the time Jim and Robin got past young James who I must say can drive a car,I had about 5-6 secs on them also when I came to lap a backmarker on the 6 lap he spun just into the corner so I backed off and the corner was covered in oil, next lap round Robin was in the wall and I had 10 secs so I just drove at 6ooo rev,s to the finish, like I said I had some mega luck and some did not, but the red is the only similarity with a Mr Shumis car!!!

My special thanks goes to 'Jacques' who normally fixes the gates and fences around the track for welding up my wishbones and bending my exhaust back to more like its usual shape. Also Gavin and Matt for putting it back together and Robin Parsons fopr fixing the exhaust bracket.

John, would the exhaust been mended if they knew we were about to beat them in the rain affected 5-a-side?

SoM 10
CC 8 (incl 2 x penalties)

To all of those that did not make the Spa trip, it was rain affected but good fun, in the main. The locals at the track were very helpful.

It was just a shame that we ran out of food on the way back, thanks to John for the yoghurts.

Note for Mr Daly.
I would think SOM should beat CC at football. Let's face it, they've only got Bristol City and Rovers. I wish a couple of NW guys had gone now. At least we would have won the footy as the Midlands boys haven't got much in the way of proper football either.

No! No Weetabix this year, JUST RIGHT was satisfactory.

It was the motorway food fight that took place whilst travelling north (not North like you are, but from Dover to Midlands)

I reall enjoyed that race, it was dead easy to do, no rush. Thanks to Comtec mum and dad for the hospitality, made it even better. Even got myself a new little sis there. Sorry for being naf at taking photos.

After the race we packed up and went for a tour of the Ardennes, saw two big tanks and tryed to see a spitfire but the musee was shut. Also went to Dinant just so I could get some fresh Leffe beer. If things go well for next year I would love to get a licence and try to compete myself.

£220 return if you travel outside peak times. Or you could try turning up early and be faced with a choice of paying £90 extra or waiting around 7 hours for the 'tightarse' boat you actually booked.

For our 7.5 Dover to Calais last year was about £550 - that was peak time though.
