Sports Sedans in the '80's.

Hello guys, does anyone have photos and/or race results of the Sports Sedan races of the early'80's when cars such as Brock's Monza, the Porsche 935's and BMW 318 turbo were racing? Little appeared in the press here in England and even less can be found on the internet. The cars seemed to be spectacular and the series like a mini version of the Group 5 races over here in Europe. Thanks in advance Ian.

Definitely an awseome era for SS's. I remember watching them on TV as a kid - the sheer variety & spectacle were awesome!!

I would love to have the results of particularly the BMW and the 935'splus any pictures of these cars. I bought a magazine on ebay two weeks ago featuring the 935 of Rusty French and this whetted my appetite! Any info' would be good however. Thanks Ian.

Rusty still has a stable of 935s and they're still looking good.

Amazing cars......Horsepower? think of a very big number then double it.

Yeah....real nice....

Rusty enters the cars in historic events and I thank him for it.

Are a topic I love on cars I didnt get to see much of. The joys of being in the west! Atleast I got to grow up with Basil's Two alfetta's and Wardy's RX7's. Happy days as a small lad. Oh the great days of earth shattering duels.

I've got the '81, 83 & 84 editions of AMRY, they printed results from the SS/GT rounds, i'll put them up at some point.

The 80s were a good era for Sports Sedans, especially as there was the likes of AMSCAR supporting Sports Sedan Series that got TV coverage of all the races, and always attracted the top names.

In 1982 Alan Jones in the Porsche 935 dominated, I think he won nearly all the races despite competition from Brock's Monza later in the year and the Edmonson Alfa. That Porsche must of been bloody fast because it could lap Oran Park GP in 1m.07sec mark, which is still a very quick time nowadays let alone 25 years ago! There is even a pic in the Motor Racing Annual of it exiting the old Champion Curve corner heading up to the bridge at Oran Park with it's front wheels in the air!

For more of a run down on the BMWs look at these pages from this thread on page 50, http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67601&page=50

The BMWs had some mixed success, Richards still scored 2rd in the championship in 1983 even though he only did 3 rounds. Rusty French in the Porsche 935 who easily won it and John Briggs in the other locally built BMW scored equal 5th in the series.

There's a great series of photos of Alan Jones with the Porsche 935 at Adelaide International Raceway in 1982 towards the bottom of this page of the photos: http://members.tripod.com/motorsportarchive3/page_6.htm

One at Sandown in 1982 here:http://members.tripod.com/motorsportarchive3/page_5.htm

Note: you may have to manually 'copy' and then 'paste' the above web address manually onto your Internet browser address bar. Otherwise just go straight to www.MotorsportArchive.com and search the photo pages.

An impressive part about that is the fact that in 1982 the run from Turn 3 to 4 at the Oran Park GP circuit included the 'motorcycle kink'. It wasn't until late 1984 (just prior to the 1984 Valvoline 300 AEC round) that a straight piece of tarmac was laid joining the two corners.

The car evolved over the years and ran with much sucess at the AMSCAR events. Basically a 2.0L NA VW motor. Greg raced Beetles at Bathurst and FVees in the 60s. The sports sedan was bought by Adrian at PowerTune at Gladesville in Sydney. As far as I know he left it in his showroom to rot.

Dad had just built up an old Beetle to play with at GEAR days at Wakefield.

Here is another early photo on front row at Oran Park with Mike Griffin's Datsun.

Yeah the VW is still sitting in the garage at Powertune the last time I looked through the garage door.
Co-incidently I meet Adrian about 5 years ago and asked him what he was doing with the car and told him that he should bring it out for a run in the state series, unfortunately he wasn't the slightest bit interested.

I am trying to think of who else used to have Beetle Sports Sedans in those days. I know one used to run in Hillclimbs and did rather well but the name escapes me. Pat Crea used to run one in the 70's.

Ken Hastings had a very quick Ford Powered VW Beetle and Max McGinley (Spelling) had one, both in VIC. In the 80s not sure of its origins or however you spell it Garry Arandt had a rotary powered version....

Nice, but not as nice as Bryan Thompson's Type 3 fastback with a Chevy buried in the tail.

Keegans from Orange used to run a supercharged Beetle in hillclimbs and used to hold the record for a tin top.
