Hi all I am a new Trainee and I will be at donington on the 29th and im looking forward to meeting every one who will be there..

It is always daunting at first, and there is lots to take in. However you'll never learn everything in one shot, (we never stop learning!) so don't worry, go with the flow and above all enjoy it

Hi guinness2702 yer that's what il more than likely do I like to do every thing anyway but like you say this way I can sort out what I will be best at thanks for the advice looking forward to doing this needed something else since I came out the reserves.

It took me 20ish years to discover the joys of Assembly, so I would thoroughly recommend trying out any discipline that might take your fancy. Including flagging!

Well, you don't have to stick to one thing. Quite a lot of us are "Dual Graded", so in my case in any weekend you are as likely to find me in Assembly, Pits or S/L, or out on bank somewhere.

I the end you can do what you want really, but people do tend to gravitate to one discipline. I would suggest that if you look at both Track and Specialist it is probably better to do Track first, then Specialist, and not the other way around.

The prime motivation is enjoyment, so do whatever you enjoy!

I think what I was trying to say was that you can get "set" into a discipline. I know I did. I always thought of myself as a "flag marshal" and that was it - nothing else interested me.

Then I broke an ankle and did race phones for a while, which opened up a new world to me, and I first did assembly simply because there was no-one else on the day (I've done pits at Mallory on the same basis)!

So I suppose what I'm saying is to just find out what it is that you really want to do but don't get set in stone too soon. (Age may also be a factor in making your decision - as you start out, or, as in my case, as it catches up with you.)

And versatility will always make you popular.

I started as a course marshal [remember them] a few years ago on the bank at Brands Hatch where I marshalled on every post both on the short and GP circuit.

I did some flagging, and post fire, until I landed up in a fire-truck as #3, where I was eventually prompted [?] to driver [#1]. Then I was made Chief Pits Fire for a GP [I've still no idea how that happened ].

I liked the Pits & Startline atmosphere so stayed and, after a brief brush with Assembly, became Deputy Chief Startline with Bryan D as the Chief [Hi Bryan]. After I moved away from Kent I continued to marshal in the Pits & Startline for many different circuits, both as a chief and an "oink" .

So, I agree, work your way through all the disciplines, you'll enjoy them all, but eventually you'll find one you Really like.

And not just disciplines - try different types of events too. Hillclimbs, autotests, sporting trials, rallycross, karts, rallies. Lots of motorsport doesn't take place at one of the established circuits.

Yep, I was going to say that but thought I'd typed enough already .

Try lots of different events at lots of different venues, don't get stuck at just the one circuit.

Chris could not have made a better point.

I did karting at 3 Sisters many years ago (Avoid the parents) but it has only been a few years since we discovered Curborough Sprints.

And we've done hill climbs in Jersey so another set of rules to understand.

I still can't believe I spent so long "tied in" to one discipline.

Get out there, try everything and don't end up in a rut...........

But if I'm up for it then no-one is going to take away my "Pitlane Hooter" job when we're at Donington.

Kaybee, Blue Book says under 16's not allowed in pit/pitlane, so that is the minimum age. Different clubs and CoCs also may have different interpretations of age restrictions, normally 16-year olds would not be permitted to do the boards at the starter's position during a live session, but no problem lining up on grid etc.

Under 16s may be allowed to work in the Assembly area, provided they are under the active supervision of a resonsible adult.

The different clubs, not just BARC, often have their own ways of running their meetings with differing start, snatch, safety car procedures etc.

Bryan - when you, me and Alan Tyson's Mum did Assembly for the Britcar 24hrs, which one of us was the responsible adult? Just as well we didn't have an under 16 year old with us!

Thanx! however, the question I posed wasn't for me but because someone asked me that question last Saturday, incidentally at a BARC meeting.
