Downforce Increase Calculation
I'm trying to see if there is a way to calculate the downforce additon my proposed undertray setup will give me.
From modelling in Solidworks and testing with COSMOS Floworks, it gives maximum pressure drop from 101325Pa to 96160.9Pa. Velocity is increased from 89.41m/s to 121m/s in the undertray. I haven't be able to find any way of calculating downforce that isn't related to aerofoils. If there isn't no worries but I thought I'd check Cheers |

I've never used Floworks specifically but most CFD codes have the option of calculating forces on the solid surfaces involved. If not, you could do it long-hand by integrating surface pressures?

got it now, you were right
surface parameters option does all the integration for you and gives straight out force readings |

Sounds like a useful thing to be able to calculate.
I'm currently building a 450bhp/ 180mph car (Mazda RX7) to eventually race in Britcar and a few other series. I can really appreciate the importance of aero, and I consider it the most important tool we must focus on sharpening. However I have little mathematical understanding of the subject. I know exactly what direction I'd like to take the car in terms of aero development, but without being able to prove anything mathematically it's just guess work. Luckily I can produce 3D models and I do have some (limited) time using Solidworks under my belt. I wonder how feasible it would be to design an aero package using Solidworks.. Has anybody done it? |

I found solidworks fairly intuitive to use, taught myself and modelled the whole of my dragster.
If you want any help with the floworks section send me a PM and I'll be happy to help. And if you want to get a good background on the aerodynamics theory and some calculations I can thoroughly recommend books by Josef Katz - Race Car Aerodynamics, and Simon McBeath - Competition Car Aerodynamics |
