Schuey admits to over-driving in qual

"I went a bit too fast," says non-front row-starting champ

Schumacher is off the front row - and behind Rubens

Michael Schumacher put his finger on the reason for being outgunned by his Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello for the first time this year - going too fast!

The world champion promised he wouldn't ease off the pedal after winning the world title last month - and he hasn't. The four-time champion, who is on a mission to help Barrichello steal second in the drivers' championship from David Coulthard, said he overcooked his lap in several places.

"I was going too fast - which makes you go too slow sometimes," he admitted.

Barrichello only outqualified Schumacher twice last year, at Silverstone and Hungary.

"Naturally you want to be up at the front, but we didn’t get it together today," added Schumacher. "Third is not disastrous for the race tomorrow. We’ll have to wait and see what we can do.

Schumacher wrapped up a fourth world title in Hungary and will equal the record of nine wins in a season if he triumphs on Sunday. He already holds that record twice himself, along with Nigel Mansell.

I was going too fast - which makes you go too slow sometimes.

"I’m a bit more optimistic now about our chances of winning," he said. "But it depends on the weather conditions we face. We have improved a lot in engine and tyres so this is something that makes us competitive against the Williams, which wasn’t the case at Hockenheim.

"The sector times show we could have been on pole, but we didn’t manage to put them altogether on one lap. I made a mistake in the first sector on my third last run and killed the overall lap time - but that’s the way it is sometimes in qualifying.

"Obviously I was trying to go for pole, and the only way was to push very hard and then you can overdo it."

Asked if the terrorist attack in America affected his concentration he said "certainly".
One word in one line. I hardly see this as 'blaming' the US attacks.

This is another of those 'look at me' threads. AKA bait threads.

Yeah...am i suppose to go "Michael is blah and blah...?"

Rubens did better than Michael today. Full stop. He was neater, and cleaner, and Monza is actually one of the very few places Rubens can match Michael in pace (as per last year's Monza). Not really that surprising, and give and take, being outqualified a couple of times a year without being a serious challenge is no big deal for Michael.

Michael will be really p***** off about this. Now he'll have to wait behind Barrichello the whole race and won't be able to join the fight with Montoya. I wouldn't be suprised to see him on a different pitstop strategy to at least give him a chance of winning the race.

Well to be honest, F1 drivers are supposed to be proffessionals, they shouldn't let anything in their personal lives affect their performace on track. I have seen the events on Tues, and was highly horrifed to see those events, yet I am not "affected" by them in any way, that would hamper my performance in doing certain activities? (eg Studying for my exams/degree, or karting even) - Maybe there was something else that was wrong with him/his car today.
I don't see how he can be that affected by it, considering that (as far as I am aware) he did not loose anyone in the attack, and that it was 5 days ago.

Aww.. come on people.. schumacher has made it clear by his subdued attitude even before qualifying that he is not in the mood to race. Before the qualifying hour started the commentators on ITV made several references to the fact that his mind was clearly somewhere else. Non-schumacher fans were just hoping he would say something like this so they could jump at the chance to criticise him. I think it is totally unfair to try to pretend you know how he's feeling, things affect people in different ways...i live in Ireland but any time i have laughed during the last few days over anything...i have in a sense felt guilt when I remember what has happened.

This is what he said at the Press conference...

"Q: Michael, you have mentioned that things that happen this afternoon may not be that important compared to other things that happened this week - would you have preferred not to race here this weekend?
MS: I've avoided to talk about it too much all weekend and I would like to continue like this if you understand."

Sounds very professional to me...

What else do you expect from Autosprout? They do the same with their weekly covers to make you buy it.

Truthfully people, not a single person throughout the Western world would not be affected by the events that have happened.

Basically, it is the next in a long line of dumb questions asked by that guy who does the interviews after qualifying and racing. Somebody please get rid of the foole!!!!!

Driving neater and cleaner makes one do better?
Rubens always drives neater and cleaner than Michael.

With the exception of two, no-one drives neater and cleaner than Rubens in the whole field. Yet, this doesn't make him the third best driver out there.

I have to disagree Drexel - I can't see any reason for him to be p****** he has wrapped up the WDC, its been a thought provoking week and he is third on the grid, its not exactly at the back.

He will have plenty of opportunities to get to the front throughout the race and including the start and he knows as well as everyone that the Williams is a lot faster in qualifying than in the race, not to mention reliability problems.

In my eyes - he is sitting pretty!

TGF will push hard to get in front in the first corner.

And RB is not a good starter.
