Mika's fooled us all...
It appears that the general thoughts lately have been that Mika is losing motivation and is seeking the quiet life with his family. All a lot of rubbish it seems. On the BBC last night i heard a take on the situation that seemed far more credible.
'The reason he has not re-signed yet is because there is contract disputes.' Apparantly Mika wants a 2 year big money contract whilst Dennis only wants to give him one year. Dennis i guess is wondering whether Mika is the man to rebuild the team again if they happen to take a downward slide, which could happen at the end of next year. Ron's probably got an eye on the younger, hungrier driver's out there who aren't gonna be put off by not having the perfect car. |

That leaves room for Jarno Trulli, and Jacques Villeneuve...
I admit that Mika is a nice guy and a fast driver...but i really do not wish to see the same driver pairing for Mclaren again next year...its just boring! JV would show DC the way to challenge for WDC, (surprising to hear that from me considering that the 2 are not the fav of my drivers). But whatever the case... i would really be disappointed with Mika if he followed team orders to move over for DC. Its really not because he shouldnt show team spirit...but the fact that he had insisted before he would not bow to team orders EVEN if Ron comes over the radio... i took his words...so now what? And i cant imagine DC still trying to put on a strong front. He wants team orders desperately..yet hypocritically came to the press to say "i'd rather not have" " i trust the team" "i trust Mika" when the underline meaning to his interview is pressurising poor Mika to assist him through the public. I'm okay with team orders as long as a team is open about it...but i think a team is hypocritical when they go about showing their dislike for something and condemning it...then secretly does it...yet deny using it like the way Mclaren does. |

The JV at Mac looks a good possibility for next year despite what they say. Regarding DC, i expected a bit more of a challenge. On his best days he's as good as racer as anyone out there, unfortunately those days are a bit too rare to win a WDC. It doesn't help that his boss didn't give him total support. Whats interesting is that DC's mid-season slump seems to have coincided with the day Michael aknowledged him as his main rival and his lacklustre drive at Monaco. Ever since then he hasn't even looked like a WDC.
I don't think Mika should have made that comment about not pulling over because it seemed a bit selfish and left the team open for attack. I think Mika's 'niceness' has alot to do with him being quietly spoken and therfore it's hard to know what the guy really feels. |

That bit about contract negotiations is quite believable. However, I do not agree with your take on Mika not being a gentleman - Mika is the perfect gentleman in a sport that is rather lacking in this aspect. I don't think that anyone is going to tell you what they are really going to do about team orders, not that any driver would be happy about it.

Hak has signed for another year
Today two different newspapers here report that Hakkinen has signed with mclaren for next year (a one year contract).
This sadly ends all Villeneuve's possibility Mclaren seems on his way down, but for sure is a lot better than the bar mess. Regarding team orders at mclaren, Hakkinen must remember that he robbed his first two "wins" from Coulthard, and was clearly preferred to him in the past few years. What I expect from a MAN is that he act towards Coulthard in the same way Coulthard was obliged to act towards him...but I'm not sure at all that hakkinen is a man. |

If I were Ron Dennis I'd be telling Mika where to shove his new contract. I'd be FURIOUS with him after yesterday's performance. IF MIKA CAN WIN WITH SUCH APPARENT EASE, WHAT THE **** HAS HE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST GOD-KNOWS-HOW-MANY RACES??????

Actually, true, but even so, Mika's performances in race and (even more alarmingly) qualifying when there has been NO mechanical gremlins have, quite frankly, been rubbish.

Ron obviously only wants Mika for one more season so he can stick Nick in the car in 2003, followed by Kimi in DC's seat in 2004.

Actually though even last year he would get stuck behind a Minardi or worse (was there worse). So I'm not sure if its a motivation thing or he's not really comfortable with Macaroon any more. |

Mika suddenly looks his old self again after an appaling first have of the season. DC seems to have hit his usual secound half of the season slump after looking so strong during the first half. Another typical and predictable year for Mclaren.
I like Coulthard. But I must say that sometimes he looks like he's not trying at all. Last edited by Raoul Duke; 17 Jul 2001 at 06:58. |

I think you should understand the way I used the word "man". I repeat that Hak SHOULD return to Coulthard all the favours the Scot has given to him in the past 4 years. If he's a man. |
