World engine gathering steam
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77996
One thing I don't like is the idea of 1600s, they sound awfully fragile to me, especially if they want 450hp coming out of one! Whilst this is to do with both rallying and touring cars (and it could be adopted elsewhere), I decided to post it here because Autosport filed it under WRC |

Can someone explain this article to me? please ))
1)Why do they need same power from 2.0 and 1.6 turbo units ? Manufacters will be allowed to choose engine concept or ? And about power, 300 hp now, 250 hp from 1.5 , 450 hp... Do they really now how much power they need. Isnt 450 hp too dangerous like group B was earlier ? 2) About costs. Why do they say 2.0 450 hp engines are cheaper, i thought turbo-engine are easier to tune. Or its about reliability ? |

450hp would be too much for rallying, but this plan is for more than rallying (of course, it would be acceptable for touring cars). The main issue is that 450hp is too much for 1600cc, end of. Quote:

The idea is that manufacturers can churn out 1600cc and 2000cc engine blocks and add the appropriate valvegear/forced induction systems to achieve multiple levels of horsepower.
The idea of different configurations looks like a good one, Subaru (and possibly Porsche) will want to run flat engines, and I suspect that the big three American companies plus Honda, Toyota and Merc will want V6s. |

I strongly believe that there should be only one limit capacity and weight of the vehicle, also there should only be a limited number of engine changes or rebuilds allowed. It is the job of the manufacturer to make it reliable and fuel efficient (so it can do one F1 race on one tank!).
In the current downsizing trend I think this should be 1400 turbo's and 2000 turbo for the unlimited categories... This would bring back some of the fun that has been missing for a while in motorsport. It would also contribute to new developments and bring back the hardcore streetrace mentality. Today all classes are so restrictive they result in about the same speed... Bring back the group B and C spirit (in a more eco friendly way with small engines)! |
