Microsoft, Sony and Toyota
The German press is reporting rumours that Microsoft is to become the title sponsor of the Toyota F1 team, paying as much as $40m a year. The stories have been linked to a deal involving Sony.
Well, if true,is good news for Toyota and F1. http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns13085.html Last edited by Led ZeppF1; 21 Jun 2004 at 04:35. |

Well, won't it be better if the big bucks are given to teams who need it more
Jordan/Sauber could make good use of the $40m...Minardi could make do with even half of it |

Yeah, can't disagree.
But, Microsoft and Sony need a teams that have prospect to be a winner. They think Toyota, with their resources, can do it. |

Will just some extra money help? mmmhhh... |

Haha..yeah..which is a pity.
Big buck backers only want to go for big teams...and those big teams already have manufacturers support...it just opens the gulf between the small and big teams |

I tend to think Microsoft would have gained more quality PR with Minardi, in all seriousness.
A bit of: 'we help the underdog', 'we're not just corporate monsters' etc being tied up with their name. Which is what they need. Which is one thing working with toyota will not do |

Microsoft and SONY are fierce rivals in the game console market - I'd be surprised to see them team up together like this.
However, SONY has an exclusive deal with Formula 1 that for the next 5 or so years F1 games will only be coming out on their consoles - maybe Microsoft are trying to get in on this through a side door ? |

This probably ties in with a business connection, maybe Toyota Motor Corp have signed a big supplier deal with Sony or Microsoft?
Looking at their current title sponsor, Panasonic - Toyota are rumoured to be their largest customer - hence the connection. Similarly HSBC are Ford's worldwide bankers. With these big sponsorship deals there is often a commerical connection behind them, either they are customers, suppliers or 'partners'.. |

Does this mean the Toyota's will start crashing more
As for helping Minardi? Well if they work with Toyota then they will get more involvement, because there are more electronic systems which need software. Hopefully there is a two way situation and Microsoft are looking at getting involved rather than just helping out. In which case Toyota is ideal. |

Soon..people will find security flaws...and a hacker from Russia could press "ENTER", and a second later, watch from TV a Toyota engine suddenly lose drive at Silverstone GP ....

Nah,I guess the drivers will most probably get a "this car has performed an illegal operation and will shut down immediately" error after 3 laps.

What I don't understand is this: Sony PS2 is in direct competition with MS X-Box. Why would they be partners

Easy deal to see the fit....!
Toyota must need a lot of Sony computers with Microsoft platforms to run on....! It just stinks of a big money-go-round! Interesting, I must say |

With MS coming in (if it's true) ...i wonder how long it will take Oracle to partake in the fray. Bill Gates and Larry Ellison have never been able to play nice.
Plus Oracle already has a partnership with BMW in the America's Cup Regatta. |

Looking at this...If I where a big company with a SERIOUS wad of cash to spend such as a title sponsor not just a couple of Million. I think the smart money would be on Jordan.
No I'm not crazy. For an instand return you'd put your money with Ferrari/Williams/Renault, but for good long term exposeure Jordans the team. a.) Jordan make money go a LONG way b.) Jordan have exceptional marketing ablities c.) you get a lot more marketing for a lot less money with the lower teams d.) Jordan have proved then can win races with the cash to run the team. e.) They have a good team image f.) They have no car manufaturer behind (not nessasary a bad thing) pushing them to pick a german driver, or a french location etc. As a long term investment...Jordan could be a good deal, and real value for money. Plus Jordan appears loyal to its sponsors. |

Also from Above,
Oracle used to Sponsor Benneton in 94/95 MS could do with a presense. They are loosing the server software market to Sun/HP/GNU Both Sun and HP have a presense in F1, MS need to take a hold |
