new Sauber impresses on debut
http://www.autosport.com/newsitem.asp?id=25764&s=5
For those who aren't registered with Autosport, basically the new Sauber has today lapped within half a second of the all-time lap record at Valencia...on its first day running. Fisichella is quoted as calling this 'the best day of my life' and it really does seem the 2004 car is seriously good. Any more on this? |

It's a F2003-GA, it would be very strange if it was off pace!

Back to topic, this is very good news for Fisi, Massa and Sauber. Not good news for Renault, BAR, Toyota and Jaguar. It's also not a bad sign for Bridgestone. |

Yes, but beyond doing a time that was 1.4 sec faster than last year's car, Fisi did 80 trouble free laps!! The second test ever for the car, and it does 80 laps without a problem! Praise Jesus! If they give Fisi a reliable car, he will bring her home in the points- you'll see! FORZA GIANCARLO!

Indeed, this could be Fisi arriving at the big-time.
Ferrari won't let them win the title, but am I going over the top expecting the odd GP win from them based on this? Certainly hope not. |

Yeah, Michael - I think it is over the top to expect a GP win. More realistic is consistently in the points and an odd podium.

Yes, good news for everyone at Sauber. And good for Bridgestone, I wonder how much pressure they put on Ferrari to "help out" Peter to help themselves. Don't want those secondary team complaints anymore. Didn't Fisi and Massa do some tire testing for Ferrari a bit back. Sorta like a "test drive" at a 2003GA dealership. Mind you, I'm not against any of this whether it's true or not. I just think it's neat to speculate about the intrigue of it all. There always seems to be more to the story than what's let on. Then we find out much later of all convaluted details.

Is the Sauber team then a manufacturer point sink, and a Ferrari test bed?
Fisi can get much needed points in a fabulous bulletproof car and maybe keep out the likes of the underlings- fighting with Renault williams and Maclaren-is it possible? then The RedSquad will easily walk away with most points- not to mention the better of the 2 saubers gets his seat at ferrari when Michael Leaves...one year with rubens and then Kimi will join the team oooo. |

So is this why Sauber has no money to run a 3rd car in Friday testing... they had to spend so much on the IP to build their own version of the 2003GA?
But seriously... Sauber builds a nice car at season's start but usually doesnt have the $$ to develop it adequately during the year, so they tend to fall behind their competition. No reason to think it wont be the same this year either.. |

Go Fisi! At last, a decent car. Mind you it's 0.5s off a time set by LAST YEAR'S McLaren. This is a 2004 car.

Its good to see Sauber back on the pace again, i was dissapointed with them last year.
This car is fast, Button is really excited about the new BAR, and Toyota should be good by the end of the year. It looks like the midfield will be close this year, although Jag are said to be having problem, and Jordan need a miracle to be well in there. |

If they are roses, they will flower!
I do hope we'll see a new midfield prothagonist this year. Don't think Sauber will reach the absolute top, but they could even be close to Renault. |

Don't say that Steve! Wrex is getting sleepy!
The Sauber pace is very promising, more so for Bridgestone than anything. |

Anyway, looking at the times and considering it was the cars first day of running, I think there's every reason for optimism. I can't ever recall a new Sauber being anything like this quick, even at the start of a season. I'm delighted for Fisi, mainly. |

Well Massa had his first drive in the new Sauber today. His comments? ''I must say that the new car feels pretty good'' He was probably itching to say "it felt remarkably similar to the car I drove last year". Or maybe not. And again there were barely any problems, although the test was eventually stopped because of a fuel supply problem. It's all looking good for Sauber so far then.....good luck to them! |

How cool would it be for this Privateer team to stick to some of the big boys? they pulled that 3rd at Indy didn't they? HHF? certainly they can do more now.
