Andrew Ranger To Atlantic
Link
According to a French Canadian website the Fran-Am people haven't come through with the European Renault V-6 drive that was supposedly the prize for winning the championship. It seems that they also haven't gotten around to paying out all of the prize money for the 20032 series - and still owe money to the 2002 champ, Bruno Spengler. It would have been nice to see Ranger in Europe - the sooner the better if his goal is F1. But, at his age, another year in N. America won't hurt. |

My guess is that he has a North American sponsor which would derive no benefit from running in a British or European series that has little or no exposure in its main market.
Does anyone know the cost of a competitive Atlantic drive? |

well north of $500,000 US. And even if he had a 'sponsor' im not sure Atlantics is going to give you any better exposure than racing in Burkina Faso

You're right. Having your name on the side of a car probably isn't that cost effective unless it's in F1 or NASCAR (even then there are a lot of qualifications). The main benefit to sponsors seems to be in having a place at major race meetings, being able to reward employees and clients with tickets, etc. A few years ago, CEOs could indulge their passion for the sport by sponsoring cars. No one really minded as long as share values continued to rise. I don't think motorsport has really caught up with the changes in the economic climate. With angry shareholders (like myself), it's harder to justify the expense of racing sponsorship. That said, for a North American firm, $500,000US for Atlantic is a bargain compared to 350-400,000 pounds for British F3. Not so good for the driver though, if his goal is F1. Given that the Fran-Am people dicked him around on FRV6, Ranger's lucky to have come up with a decent ride on relatively short notice. He turned 17 in September, if he gets to Europe at 18 or 19, he'll still be doing well.
