I think like anything in life you have to pursue happiness to have a fulfilled life and if JV doesn't want to race champcars so be it. I would only want him here if that's what he wants and I don't think at the end of the day anyone would think the less of him for doing so(racing champcars).

What mountainstar said.
Michele Alboretto said he would "race until I die" and he did -- because he was passionately dedicated to racing, even in a horrible car like the 1993 F1 car that I can't remember the name of now (Luca Badoer drove the other one). And although it was certainly a tragedy that he was killed racing, I think for him being relegated to tending bar in a Montreal nightclub would have been worse because it would have been a living death ... And Gilles always said that he feared being blinded racing a lot more than being killed, because that would mean living death for him. |

Liz, it was a Lola-Ferrari, entered by Scuderia Italia.
As for Alboreto, I understand what you mean, but I think his wife and children would rather he was still around. He was a rich man - so I don't think he'd have had to resort to pulling pints. |

I'm sure his wife and children would rather have him around and so would I. But is a prolonged "living death" cut off from the one thing you want to do, better than a life cut short yet lived to the full the way you wanted to live it?
Since life doesn't contain any do-overs, we'll never know in the case of Mr. Alboretto. But I do know a number of miserably unhappy people who were forced out of work they loved, by well-meaning spouses or parents whose "someday you'll thank me" is just salt in the wounds. But that is a discussion for another thread. If it's Jacques' free choice to retire from racing, then he must be happy with it, and if he's not, he can un-retire any time he likes. |

Exactly.
Whether he should race or not is a decision for him, he's made it and we all respect that. |
