Will TGF Be The Winningest Driver Of All Time?

Its only a matter of time untill Michael becomes the winningest driver of all time. Will he then be considered one of the if not the greatest of all time?

One of the greatest? Without doubt.

The Greatest? Unlikely.

I agree with Maxmil - TGF will be one of the greatest, but not the greatest.

I think he's already considered one of the greatest.

As little as Alain Prost is the greatest driver of all time, neither will TGF be when he breaks that record.

I don't see how the number of race wins alone can determine how great a driver is. You should consider:

1. How many different cars were the wins achieved in. (i.e. how good is the car)
2. The number of races per season.
3. The general opposition.
4. Can the driver outclass his teammate? - Preferably not just in contract negotiations.

Love him or hate him he will be seen as one of the best of his era, but never the absolute best by anyone except a biased follower.

Of course...
Michael is one of the greatest F1 driver ever...
Michael is the best F1 driver of this generation...
Michael is NOT THE best ever...

how about this from a "biased follower"? Anyone disagree?

I'm as die hard as one can get, but '94 and '97 will instantly disqualify him of ever being "THE BEST". As others have said, he is the best today & one of the best ever. He will probably break the records, but as R said, thats not what makes you the greatest.

Winningest, Yes

Best, Yes in my opinion. However, I admit it will always be a matter of standards. Car driven, competition, overall impact on F1, Nr of WC's, etc, etc. All I know is that one will not be able to have a "best of all" discussion based on the record books without talking about TGF.

In the end it will be between him, Fangio and Tazio Nuvolari. Three totally different eras. We all have our own lists with additional greats but records do count and Schumi is on track for something like
65-75 victories and 5 WC's. The sixth one...well,... that's the Holy Grail.

If you mean 'greatest' as in best driver, then i think he is in definate contention. If you wanna consider factors such as 'most popular', 'most admired', 'most sportsmanlike', then obviously he is not the greatest.

Also the modern proffesional F1 is far removed from the olden days and trying to compare to eras justs doesn't work. Read Neutral's interview with Tanzo on the 'that's what it's all about..' thread for a good explanation.

no im not wrex, can u explain again? anyway sticking to forum rules, MS is a great driver, wether he is the greates is another debate. however, in his very first race, he qualified in 7th position - in a very uncompetitive car. this truly shows his ability to overcome chassis weaknesses and how good a driver he is.

The same 'very uncompetitive' car that de Cesaris would have finished second with in the same race if he hadn't suffered an engine failure.

TGF has always had a reasonably competitive car (Brundle would probably have won the Canadian GP of '92 had he not broken down) and there will always be a question mark surrounding not only his demands for complete subservience by his team-mates, but also the issues surrounding the use of traction 'enhancement' for his third WDC, and similar concerns were raised about his '94 Benetton (plus he nerfed his WDC challenger off the circuit at the final race).
I personally feel that he is a very fine racing driver, but as to whether he is as good as he is held up to be is a different matter.

Waffles, we know who Mr. T. is. But since we couldn't see your your mohawk and gold jewelry, we missed your irony. And yes, you DO have to be diplomatic here. Know who you are teasing and know how they will take it. If you have any doubts, DON'T SAY IT.

No, TGF will NOT be "the winninigest driver" - since he is essentially racing alone. This is a moot debate though since, like Wayne Gretzky, he is scoring his "wins" in a very much changed and diluted atmosphere than the real "winningest drivers" had to cope with.

Juan Manuel Fangio will remain "the winningest driver" and Prost will be his second. At least ten other drivers will be called "the winningest driver" ahead of TGF.

TGF will be remembered as the best of a very poor field until the field improves (as it will do soon) and he is relegated to the back of the grid or retires, which ever comes first.
