XFE life
as far as the XFE goes and its tech and engine life and its design age- it is an old man in racing terms
Champ Car engine’s pistons and valves come within 0.05mm of each other, at speeds of 12,000 rpm www.cosworth.com this is nuts! a modification to this eninge or the XFE2 what make it an even 3.0 litres? for more torque and less boost more life? or 2.5 litres? where can they modify the current engine style if they stay with KK's recommendation He like 's the 2.65V8 turbos so what can we do with this ? |

I don't understand exactly what you're trying to say. Why would the engine be modified? In terms of the engine design being "old" it also has to do with the money that was spent developing the engine. Which is going to be more advanced, a 5 year old engine that had $100M spent on it, or a new engine that had $10M spent on it?

I'm not interested in how advanced or otherwise the engine is - it works, and it's provided equally. It's a solid thing for the series, keeps costs under control and means it isn't reliant on manufacturers.

"0.05mm" close counts in horseshoes and handgrenades.
Sence this engine was designed, the only HP increases have come at the cost of higher RPM and reliability. Keeping the XFE saves not only the design cost, but the retraining of hundreds of production and service personel. The only compelling reason for change would be to attract other manufactures; but then we're back in the "spiraling cost" game, as the IRL is just becomming aware of. |

oh don't get me wrong- i Love the XFE. no need to change it...
as all series grow and new specs show favor from builders and there is always talk of the "new spec" to come up...In terms of freshening up the series i don't think it really needs a entirely new engine, as the chassis become updated or a new one shows up a new engine may as well, I simpy expect that the trend is for a new engine to develop, i would increase the litres to 3 and lower boost at the same rev limit to ensure similar components can be used and power maintained- as well as more torque. no real need to change the engine, but change will happen, but how and if the series owners do like the current platform how or what would change in the V8 turbo be expected to be? i am not a fan of going NA for this series, or running a V10... superfund anyone? A1GP...no this is champcar it must be super and turbo and... |
