Mario Haberfeld speaks about his plans
SpeedTV has posted a piece about Mario Haberfeld - you can read it here:
http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/champcar/16919/ I think it's pretty funny he rules out IndyCar because it's predominantly oval-based, only to aim for NASCAR which has even less non-ovals on the schedule. C'mon Mario, admit it's the money you're interested in Whatever happens I hope he doesn't simply fade away and gets to race somewhere though... |

I thought that article was pretty wierd too. "OW is too unstable, that's why I was in it during the worst possible time and in backmarker teams."

Considering that Mario has been paying for his drives the last 2 years, I'm not sure you can fairly claim that he's motivated purely or primarily by money.

I have to say it would be interesting to see what he could do should he get a foot in the NASCAR door though. He is quite talented, after all.

It's great to hear from Haberfeld. If given the right equipment, he could be very successful. It's a shame that he couldn't find a competitive ride in Champ Cars. In some ways I don't blame him for turning down the job at Coyne.

Turning Coyne down won't be a problem for him long-term as long as he can get somethign sorted out by the end of the year. it's better to have an uncompetitive ride than no ride at all, because at least it keeps your name out there, and (as in Servia's case last year) a reputation can really be built by some strong runs in a car that isn't percieved to be capable of them.

Having said that, maybe Mario isn't confident of being able to put a bad car where it shouldn't be. Still, I cannot imagine a situation where a driver would choose to sit on the sidelines over taking a drive - just ask Servia about when PWR collapsed, leaving him with nowhere to go. |

In 2003 Haberfeld had a decent car. It wasn't going to win any races, but it was at least capable of a consistant top 10. In 2004 he had the worst car on the grid. For 2005 he'd be looking at a Coyne car, one of the worst. He wasn't getting any shots at a good ride. A comparison would be like having someone in a Minardi for 3 years straight, despite proving his worth.
