F3000 Defense

Has anyone in the history of the F3000 series ever won the title then raced in the F3000 championship again the next year.

They usually get a F1 drive. For Justin Wilson,CART or P1GP would seem better options than a Minardi...

My memory tells me that someone (possibly Erik Comas) tied on points with someone else (possibly Jean Alesi, or it might be the other way round or someone else totally), and but lost on wins, then stayed on and won it properly the following year.

Correct Alesi drew with Comas in 89 but lost out on countback so came back and won it in 1990. Mike Thackwell won the last f2 championship in 1984 and then came back and raced f3000 in its first season 1985 and finished runner up having looked likely to wrap the title up with 3 rounds to go but suffered awful luck. I think Fittipaldi was threatening to come back and defend the title he won in 91 but he got a Minardi aerobatic drive instead.

Guys like Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso may well disagree with that statement. They already have or will kick on from their drives at Minardi.
