Side skirts
Do the 'typical' side skirts fitted to production cars actually do anything?
Generally the bottom of the skirt is level with the bottom of the car, just making the bottom bit of the car 'flatter'. I am trying to decide whether fitting the optional extra site skirts to my RWD Corolla is worth the increase in weight. Thanks Attached are (hopefully) examples of a Corolla with and without skirts -

They don't do much unless you've got a smooth underfloor and / or rear diffuser set-up. Without that the pressure under the car won't really be low enough to need protecting from in-flow from the sides.

I remember reading that the Calibra ones did do a lot, but they were developed specifically in house for the model by people who knew what they were doing, after market (even OEM aftermarket) may not be so good. Look at those Opel ones and the sills extend about 6" in, and I remember hearing this was important

Great for MOTs !! I took a Uno Turbo in that was like a pepper pot behind them !

I have them on the IROC Dennis and would reckon al they do is contribute to the overall weight and look nice!

Several years ago we had an A35 yes an A35 van in for an mot. It belonged to a chippie and he had made a good looking (and painted) door sill out of wood ! Sorry but I had to put that in this thread .

There was a very well known (and driven) M5 running around with a timber front subframe.
Think that it had been treated with Rentokil so no MOT worries Gordon

I,ve seen close mesh chicken wire/plaster sill,s,the car,a MK1 Lotus Cortina,the owner was a builder,We couldnt understand what the groaning was whilst on road test.!

a friend of mine one time was putting some bog in a front wing and didn't have the correct size piece of metal or mesh so he filled it with a JAFFA CAKE and filler , then primed and painted it looked a treat ! don't know for how long though ?
 some people hey...

Seeing that this thread has degenerated into old bangers, what about when I went to the auction to look at a Mk 2 Cortina. Having a quick look at it outside I pushed down on the front wing, there was a loud click and a gap of about 2 inches appeared between the wing and front panel and a pair of mole grips on the ground ! What about a thread on auction moments in parc ferme .

I bought a Land Rover with a Simons Hoist (Cherry Picker) on the back at an auction once, very low mileage direct from the GPO (remember them?).
Anyhow it was a bit of a sticker and no one would bid on it as it would not drive through under its own steam. As I had a buyer for the hoist so i went and made an offer out the hall and It went down to me. I started it up and from previous experience on the model I guessed the problem was a rear half shaft so I just stuck it into 4WD and drove out the hall with the bargain of the day and many sick traders glaring at me, did I make a killing on that one! :-) |

probably off topic.
My uncle restores cars for a living and was asked to paint a car that was previously "repaired" and primered. The owner was not impressed when after having the car for a week he refused to do the job - that is until he handed what was left of the sills to the owner in a shoe box............. The original repairer just bogged it up instead of replacing them as he said he would. |
