The Austro-Daimler Company (1899-1936) had Paul Daimler (son of Gottlieb Daimler) in Bad Cannstatt near Stuttgart as director until 1905, when Ferdinand Porsche took over. After the war Porsche was responsible for the ADM I before he left in 1923, when he moved to Daimler near Stuttgart.
The first Austro-Daimler racecar was built in 1901, identical to the 24 hp Cannstatt-Daimlers. The 1904 90hp racecars were identical to the German Cannstatt-Daimler design and were produced for the 1904 Gordon Bennett race on the Taunus Circuit near Bad Homburg. The 1912 -1914 Austro-Daimler cars were designed under Porsche’s direction. In 1909 Austro-Daimler produced the 22/80 hp model for the Prinz Heinrich-Fahrt, where three of these 6.5-liter chain-driven cars were entered. In 1910 Porsche entered 5.7-liter ohc 4-cyl 86 hp at 2300 rpm cars, winning with Porsche, Fischer and Boos-Waldeck. For 1911 other cars were designed for the Austrian Alpine Trial but now with shaft-drive. Other variants were designed like the 16/18 hp and 16/25 hp. In 1912 the 3.6-liter 14/32 hp models were entered, for 1914 the 20/30 hp and 35/60 hp models. The Austro-Daimler 1.5-liter and 2-liter Sascha-Gordinis were entered during 1922 and 23 and gained success in these small classes. Their race cars became quite successful in the hands of Hans Stuck during 1927-1930, achieving many great victories at international hill climbs and enabling Stuck to be called the Bergkönig - King of the Mountains. |
