1998 Daytona 500
I'm not sure if anybody knew this, but just earlier today on Speedvision they were showing coverage of the 1998 Daytona 500(I was switching back and forth between it and qualifying for this year's 500).
I know for some of you 1998 may not seem like a very long time ago. But for me, that's when I was just starting to get into Winston Cup racing. Personally I am amazed to see how much things have changed in 4 years. The cars are different, and even the sounds of the engine's are different. And the restrictor plate racing was different, the cars were a lot more spread out, rather then bunched up in a pack. But what's even more impressive was the fact that I didn't even notice that anything had changed. But now as I was watching this 4 year old race, it really seemed ancient compared to today. |

I'm sure if you look at races from other series from 4 years ago, that they would too look 'ancient' !
NASCAR isn't stuck at 12/31/1969 |

Back in 98 they still ran in packs...pack of 10, then 18, then 15...the only difference is now its a pack of 43...the plates were bigger in 98. Heck the difference between last year and this year is obvious...no brick walls on top of the roof of the car.

They had 'big-ones' in them days too, 1998 saw a 19 car pile up at Talladega, luckily the fire wasn't too bad, Dale Sr had to grow his tache back !

talladega had 2-wide acion, in 2000 the single file action was exaserbated by the shocks-rule which made the cars push too much!

Do you blame him? NASCAR drivers are not children. They know the risks of what they are doing. These tracks were designed to go fast, so the cars need to go fast. After all, what good is a superspeedway without high speeds?

I know that during the 2000 Talledega race(The one where Earnhardt came back from 18th within the final few laps to win) I did see a lot of 3 wide action. That was when they had just recently changed the aero package to make the racing more exciting. Now everyone's complaining that it's to dangerous so their changing it back.

The danger with the three-wide racing was that, it was toooooo close, even closer than before, anyone got a bit out of shape and it was trouble, Talladagea Oct 2001 saw a big one , a year previously a bullet was dodged!

Guess what we saw today..the 500 will be more like 98...single file for 500 miles...no passing.
