Bathurst '97 - Would Brock have won?
I know life is always full of what ifs, but does anyone else think that, had #05s engine not expired, Brock and Skaife would've won the 1997 Bathurst "Primus 1000 Classic" 1000?

I think they had the quickest car, Brock was on song, Skaife was driving at close to his best.... i think we could safely say with a trouble free run they'd have brought it home in the top spot.. but sadly, at 12.03pm on Lap 52, Car 05 was out, of the Primus 1000. Not to be unfortunately - but the first 52 laps were something to watch thats for sure.

You only had to look at the reactions of the team, most definitely including skaife, to know the answer to that.
Brock, in his usual professional and philisophical manner, just was happy to have convincingly led those laps |

On a perfect day I have to believe that it would have happened. When he stepped out of the car, he was leading, had the fastest lap and had built a decent margin. Not to mention had pole (Thanks, Mark!) and had been fast all weekend.
That said, it was a day against the favourites. Lowndes smacked the wall. Gardner lost out whilst leading. Seton fell to the wayside. In numerology, 3's are a lucky number. 3x3 is by and far one of the luckiest numbers. This may explain 89, 94, 95 and 97 rather adequately. That said, when the great man walked away from 05 in that pit stop, he was leading and had the fastest lap. What a fitting way to finish your last REAL tilt at an event. God bless you, Pete, you are surely missed. |

To be honest i doubt it would have happened. If the engine hadn't expired when it did i'm sure something else would have happened, 05 didnt exactly have the best luck when it came to the 90's, pretty much year after year there was always something that would happen.

Everything else going as planned, they probably would have won.
But how many people can say that after any race? |

Which came first, the chicken or the egg.......
As pointless as posturing on a what if race result, 11 years on. |

If the fuel gauge didn't break would Brock have won in 1973?
If Brock had taken it easier would he have won in 1974? If he hadn't have run out of fuel on Conrod would Brock have won in 1976? If he didn't break an axle while leading would Brock have won 1981? If Moff didn't split an oil cooler on the speedhumps would Brock have won in 1986? If Brock had of switched to a Wolf Sierra like he was offered in time for Bathurst would he have won in 1988? If he didn't have to pit every 3 laps would he have won in 1990? |
