They're only wired 24v for starting. The rest of the system draws only from one battery.

The thing is, even if the second battery looses a bit of charge when cranking you will still have loads more voltage than from one battery on its own.
Also if you are carrying it along for the ride anyway you can run wipers and brake lights off it to conserve the main one. I have even ran an MGB 6v battery in line in the past, but now use 2 Varley red tops on their sides in the back. As I am an old duffer I remember when we used to fit 12v electrics to the old E93a "puddle jumper" Ford Pops, and we never had any trouble with the std 6v starter motor |

I don't use an alternator Al, and i have never had problems with my MSD because of it. Although i too question the saving when i'm at the track, its p****ing down with rain and i'm trying to connect a battery charger...

Actually I did a bit more research and MSD say it will work OK from 10v to 18v and short bursts of 24v when starting. They also recommend what Gordon is saying and if you dont run an alternator have a separate battery for running all your bits and bobs and a 15 amp battery for the ignition. I did find somewhere when I was having a misfire and suspected it may be the MSD that the need 13.4 volts optimally but as it turned out the msfire was more to do with too large a plug gap.
