Bobby Labonte is leading the point standings with Dale Earnhardt Sr. 45 points back and Dale Jarrett only 68 behind. Mark Martin and Tony Stewart are about 215 points behind and are still in the chase since Stewart put up a great second half last year and Mark Martin usually puts up a better second half. It should be real interesting to see who comes out on top. I think the picture should become clearer in five races after the Bristol race. This is usually a race where you are lucky to come out without some sort of damage to your car and there is also a road race at Watkins Glen a few weeks before this that can change the fortunes of drivers quickly.
All in all, so far this looks to be one of the better battles for the championship that we have had in recent years. |

I have to admit I wrote Martin off after those bad 5 races, but suddenly he withint striking distance, 217 back, which is like 2 bad races for the leader. Course, he still has 5 drivers in front of him who neec to have problems, but suddenly it isn't as bleak. Looks like is going to keep getting closer. The question is, how long can Labonte hold onto his lead his with lackluster performances of late.

I'm been waiting for Labonte to bust out a few wins, but it's been his teammate instead who has come alive. Autoweek seems to think Stewart is too far back, but I think there's more than enough races to overcome 215 points. The wild card is undoubtably Earnhardt - anyone think that Coulthard and Earnhardt would be title contenders as late as the second half?

Don't count out DJ. He's been running more consistant here lately, and consistancy is the key to winning the Winston Cup, not, unfortunatly, winning races.

True, DJ and Labonte's seasons are very similar...favorites who got early wins, then have been quiet as far as first places yet are still at the top of the race.

I feel sorry for Mark Martin. He cannot win a championship with incidents like yesterday.
