Having seen on the TV where a couple of F1 cars touched the tecpro in AD, and was quite surprised at how little it moved. It was difficult to determine the speed of the car, but I was surprised that there was no damage.

With the 'edges' being so close to the circuit though, I really can't see the circuit being used for bikes - no 'soft' run-off, hard barriers close to the edge of the circuit.

Absolutely right. They seem to have it wrong at Philip Island in my view. If a car can cross that gravel trap you would have to expect that a bike could too and the consequences of that are potentially horrendous.
The answer is to do the best you can in the circumstances and accept that you cannot make motor sport safe only safer.

watching that video and after seeing it for myself at Oulton pk
I'm wondering what use is a gravel trap for stopping high speed objects such as cars? as that car on the video and the one i watched at Oulton just seem to skim over the top and not dig in.

i know a gravel trap stops slower things, well had to push a few out

please enlighten me

And then when a car goes in sideways....

I am beginning to think gravel traps are pretty poor at stopping cars, but what are the alternatives? grass, which is like an ice ring when wet or tarmac which isn't very popular with the bikes and results in the racing line being 4 wheels over the kerbing.
