Dijon - Create an extension
http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...=119627&page=5
Being inspired by this topic, I decided to create one here! I have decided to make a rough sketch up of the current Dijon layout (and I mean a 20 minute job here..). The challenge I give you is to come up with an extension to the current layout, wherever you wish to do so. Here is my rough sketch up file, and feel free to touch it up to make it a little more accurate, if you wish! Selby |

Your extension on the upper side of the track fits well with the original flow. But the corners of the quasi-infield section on the right-hand side should be somewhat more worm-like to fit in.
Apart from that, I'd like to say that I still wouldn't want to mess with this track, since smaller series than F1 also need good tracks to race on and this certainly is one. |

That looks like what Herman Tilke may have wanted to do to Zandvoort blended with some classic design. I like it though I somewhat agree with Yannick. Not that this track is needed for those lower series because the short track does that very well if kept, but due to the fact it removes my favorite turn on the whole circuit: the steeply inclining mostly blind Parabolique the original extension job left us with. To think it was actualy meant only as a makeshift solution. If the extension plans would have been completed there would have been no doubt the French Grand Prix would still be held at Dijon. If not it would be the Swiss Grand Prix.
I'll get my entry done soon. Will do it like I did with the Jacarepagua challenge. |

First image is modified, second is the current version showing the deforested sections that never recieved asfalt. |

Yes, I'm still around... Not that you missed me much after just a few tracks.
I have seen some great tracks made up over the past few months, and now I found the time to have a look at Sketch Up. I tried to design the extension in the same (Hugenholtzian, although I don't think he was the designer) style as the rest of the track, maybe a bit more modern to ad an overtaking opportunity or two. It would probably feel somewhat like the extension at Brands Hatch (UK), although quite different at the same time. Also I did my best to make best use of the area with the younger trees to keep the treehuggers "happy". It's just a quick sketch, so no service roads, stands and just simple run off traps without a grass-gravel-tarmac distinction. You will notice the traps look weird. My Sketch Up tends to have that today. Feel free to comment, modify or trash it. For you convenience I placed numbers near the corners. |

My half-hearted attempt - couldn't decide whether I wanted it to be intentionally Tilke-esque (i.e. rubbish) or a genuine attempt to make an appropriate extension, so you got a bit of both

That works absolutely fine. Looks like a completely natural extension to me.

It doesn't make as much sense to me. Nonetheless it's a great design.

The problem with Dijon is that any edit ruins it, and it's too short for most.

Another half-hearted attempt: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3527528
My limited graphical skills compromised this one. I had intended the corner at the end of the new backstretch to be a little tighter, but not as much as the parabolique, and the both parts of the Esses leading back onto the original track to have both the same radius as the 2nd part, maybe with a little swingback at the entry to the Esses like there used to be on the entry of the corner that I had to remove for the sake of this edit. |

Well basicaly you've designed a new circuit by reversing sections, adding sections that aren't needed at all and such but I guess we have different mentalities. I prefer to keep tracks as much as possible what they are now or once were while you like to design something totaly different. Am I right?

Imo Dijon does not need an edit, it is perfect the way it is. Longer is not always better in circuit design. Some of the greatest racing in all of F1 happened on this track. I feel no need to alter it at all. It would just make it worse.

Oh, one more thing - just some advice: next time if you don't like a track just say you don't like it - that'll sound like an opinion and it's gonna be respected even more. Don't say it dosn't make sense because it sounds like you'resaying the guy didn't know what he was doing - and I don't think this much is true. Here, for example, i had a clear idea in my head. You don't like it - that's absolutely OK, I'm not saying it's a great edit, either. But that it doesn't make sense... Dunno, years ago people here seemed to have a bit more sophisticated ways to tell me what i did was crap... bio |

sections that are not needed: what kinds of sections DOES this track need? Honest questions. bio |
