Ford Fiesta Championship Technical Regs

Hi people

Firstly, I apologise if this is not in the correct place.

Hopefully there is someone out there that can point me in the right direction!

We are currently in the process of preparing a class B fiesta for next years fiesta championship. We are planning on running in the last event at the formula ford festival in October but are having a bit of an issue with the exhaust system regs.

"Class B
A fully operational Catalytic Converter Exhaust System Part No. 96FB 5E211 EF (or current Ford Motor Co. exhaust sold specifically for this model of car) must be fitted at all times. No modifications are permitted to the catalyst, but the silencer units and tail pipe may be exchanged for the Ford Racing tail pipe assembly. The internal diameter of the exhaust pipe after the final silencer shall be 51 ± 2mm diameter, and at the exit must be square to the pipe centre line to allow a good seal for the “exhaust suction test equipment”.
The full exhaust system shall be free of leaks. Catalytic operation will be tested by any means. The final section of the exhaust must exit from the rear of the car, locating the outlet in the manufacturers cut-out of the rear skirt, and comply with MSA noise levels. Cars originally fitted with an exhaust gas re-circulation system may remove these parts, provided all openings are effectively sealed."

We are trying to work out whether there is a requirement for a silencer on the system or not? The car we have is an ex racing fiesta from the same championship and there is no rear silencer?

If there is anyone that is running a class B fiesta or can clear up this issue that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Ollie

I don't know about this specific series but the fact that it mentions "silencer units" it's obviously got to have one of some sort.
Just because your car doesn't have one doesn't mean anything as it could have been used in another type of racing as long as it passed the noise test.

if the Ford Racing tailpipe assembly includes a silencer, then Yes; if it doesn't, then No, is how I read quote.

That's how we have read it as well but cannot find any info on the 'Ford Racing Tailpipe Assembly'

Might have to do a bit more digging!

Thanks guys

Its a bit vague,i notice that it says that the parts "may" be changed, it does not say "must" be changed, one might say that if you have a cat and the car noise tests ok job done. Contact the series scrutineer and ask.

I think it's pretty clear! You have a choice of 3 systems - the cat system with the part number listed, "current Ford Motor Co. exhaust sold specifically for this model of car", or "Ford Racing tail pipe assembly". Simples

The exhaust system can use a genuine or a aftermarket cat but not a racing type cat, the exhaust can go from front to rear with no silencers at all, and it should pass the noise test. The rules were written back in 2001 and the exhaust rules were never updated. You should be able to ask the technical scrut, and his details should be on the fordracing.eu website or via Kevin Shortis. Everyone involved in the championship is very helpfull.
Good luck
Lee
