Weighty Issues In V8Supercar

Interesting new decision from the V8SC commission, to increase the minimum weight of the new CotF weapons by... 10kg..

Story Here

Whoooppy dooo...

Arguably all we are seeing is a group of teams unable to get to the minimum weight ganging up on the one that from all reports has built all 3 of their chassis below the minimum requirement (and have to ballast their cars to achieve compliance..)

But 10kg.. about the dimension of the drink bottle/pump system

peckstar has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
isnt part of the issue that the fords weigh heavier due to the road car using a steel bonnet and boot and thus the race car also has too

The article suggests that Mr Jones & Mr Dane were at odds over the proposal, and both of them run Holdens...

your reading something different to me then.

WEIGHT INCREASE FOR V8 SUPERCARS

Quote:
It is indicative of where their respective situations stood, that leading Holden team owner Brad Jones opposed the increase, while Ford Performance Racing team principal Tim Edwards campaigned for it.

10kg extra with the forces generated at racing speeds could have a significant impact on the tyre performance towards the end of a long race.

Would've been easier and less tedious for Ford to submit an application to homologate aluminium panels for the Falcon.

Another thing, weren't the CotF chassis meant to weigh in at 1250kg, as opposed to the previous 1350?

Haha - surely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would almost be getting closer to be a touring car championship if they started trying to reflect the road cars in race cars.

ford dont homologate anything. those days are well over. apparantly the material needs to be representative of the road car. Ford are hardly about to change that just for v8 supercars.

the previous 1350 did not include the driver. In theory we are now done to 1300 (or now 1310)

DRT, your mind is now blown, surely we can expect your support from now on

It is one of the 'oddities' of the regulations, the rule regarding the panels.

The material of the panels on the road car matter more than what engine it has and the wheels it drives on the car.

Even more particular, perhaps that should be the material of the bonnet matters more ....
After all, they do replace the door skins and quarter panels with composite materials.

My best guess is that they don't want composite bonnets because they wouldn't crumple like metal does, and with the amount of nose-to-tail action there would be f/g or c/f all over the track; and the cost to press the Falcon bonnet panel in aluminium just for 6 race cars and their spares would be too much. Easier to just raise the weights by 10kg, and taking parity to the extreme!

As an aside, I replaced the factory aluminium bonnet on my Z with a fibreglass one because I wanted venting to let the heat out; was surprised at just how much lighter the stock bonnet was. Maybe I should go back to a stock bonnet with some add-on bonnet louvres ...

Ford could possibly make it worthwhile by 'enhancing' their FPVs with alu bonnets and bootlids. Perhaps even the EcoBoost Falcon could benefit from this?

Would it be worth the effort and cost for 3 years before departure from manufacturing in Oz?

no, blatant absurdity would be positions 2nd and 3rd protesting that the driver in first place had the choice of rubber debris to bring his car back up to weight on the cool down lap !!!

Wouldn't the simple solution be to take a kilo or 2 (equal to the weight of the water) off the combined weight. If he's still legal, he wins, if not, he's excluded.

BTW, did anyone identify who poured the water in?

I would imagine that the penalty applied was due to a breach of the parc ferme regulations - how much difference the water actually made or might make probably didn't come into it.

Certainly a bizarre little episode - very strange.
