Touring Car Crowds

I have just seen over on the TocaTour site that there was 16,500 people at Oulton yesterday, which I think is a very healthy crowd indeed. I also belive that there were 18,500 at Brands a couple of weeks ago, so you can say the BTCC is on the way up again.

Mmm.. thats really not very big crowds... TOCA used to claim 25,000+ on a regular basis and virtually any meeting in Europe gets considerably more than that...
Eg Renault day at Jarama last year, 25,000+, Dutch Clios and V6's at Assen, 35,000+ (down from expected 70,000 due to horrendous weather...)
There are still some serious issues with the promotion...

But I think that it is good starting point. Does anyone know how many people where at the same meeting last year.

Not sure of exact figures, but I'm pretty certain both rounds have been an improvement on last year. Maybe it's somewhere over at TOCAtour

First round 2001 - "Over 14,000", second round, "13,500".

Source: Renault marketing CD.

Surely there were more people than that at Brands?

I don't know but there has definitely been more people at the first two meetings. That was obvious by just looking left and right! They are on their way up

It really did feel as if there were more people than was quoted for Brands and it was a good crowd for Oulton yesterday (and qualifying - you only needed to look at the number of cars for confirmation of that)
It's certainly on the way back and getting better crowds than last year.

There was definatly more people at Oultin this year than last, think there could have been more if the weather had been better in the morning.

TOCA`s figures can be misleading as they include all the "freebie" tickets given away by the manufacturers and dealers.

I was looking across to Knickerbrook and the number of cars in the carpark - that was the most I have ever seen.

Was it me or were there more people on the banking up by hill top than normal? Seemed to be slightly less on the infield than last year though.

Slightly less on the infield because it was a bit soggy perhaps.
Also vehicles weren't allowed to park there (shame!) so more people were down the front.

I got moved from a spot just before knickerbrook on the outfield because the ground was subsiding! madness!

Definately more people there. One of the biggest crowds i've seen in a long time. Perhaps with some competant TV coverage (with will hoy too! wow!) the BTCC will get the recognition it deserves.

Well for the V8 Supercars over here AVESCO, the series promoter's attendance figures include:

* Birds flying overhead
* Clouds in the sky
* Trees by the track
* Dollars in HRT/TWR's bank account
* The amount of times Tony Cochrane sh.its on club racing.
* Number of times Mark Skaife talks sh.it
* Bumps in the Canberra track surface
* Cars burnt out on Mount Panorama
* Number of laps a DTM car would win by if it was allowed to race at Bathurst.

And they are still only getting a few tens of thousands of people at each race.

Hopefully if the racing stays as good and people watch it on ITV, they might decide to goto their local track when there is a meeting - adverts on local ITV regions might help too...

When you look at Donnington in 98 when 50,000+ turned up simply beacuse Mansell was there puts it into perspective to the goal we need to achieve.
The BTCC is going through a changing period with lots of new faces, if some of the old had remained ie. Menu, Rydell it would have at least put a balance between the new and old drivers and yet still kept the media and public interest rather than having to start from scratch.

Regards

Guy
