When exactly was run the British Open for F1, F2 and F Atlantic cars. Who were the champions. Mike Wilds competed there in 83 as we know now.
Thanks |

I'm no expert but wasn't this a relative of the Aurora series
If so see Motor Sport MArch issue which has a piece on the series and even has a photo of a car for sale (March 811) with what could well be Mike Wilds driving it |

The entry size tells its own story doesn't it? Did Mike Wilds Williams really have a 3800cc engine?

Yes, it was really a 3.8. Colin Bennett was talking the series seriously. Unfortunately, nobody else way.

There were two other races planned in the 1983 series, at Donington and Thruxton, but were both cancelled.
In 1984, there was a much more successful series, the BRSCC National Libre series or the MacLean Hunter Open Championship to give it its formal name. Twelve races were planned and nearly that many took place. There were 20 runners at the opening race at Donington Park on 8 Apr 1984, nine of which were F1s or F5000s. Lawler won it, using a combination of F2 Ralt RT4-BMW and F1 McLaren M30, and Trimmer was second in the F5000 Lola T330. Anyone have any entry lists for those 1984 races? Allen |

I was doing a Test Day at Aintree. Alo Lawler turned up with the McLaren, just to see if he could go faster than the outright lap record.
Can't see that happening these days. |

These "libre" races morphed in to Euroboss and Historic F1 so they never really died........

The BRSCC libre series ran until 1989, by which time the HSCC's Historic F1 series was well established but that was a full six years before BOSS arrived. For the libre cars, there was only the Lydden series from 1990.

The opening round of the 1984 series was well covered (Autosport 12 Apr 1984 p63). After the fiasco of the 1983 series, I imagine people were wary of building it up too much though. And the BRSCC are not really the people you associate with a lot of hype.
Do you have the dates of the cancelled 1983 races? Allen |

I've got some Libre progs/fields for Mallory from 82-85 or so, which have some quite interesting entries. PM me your address Allen, I'll post them to you if you want.

Allen, I have the September 1984 round (10) at Oulton, though my photos show Alo in the McLaren not the Ralt on the entry. Photo has 1T on the M30 though so not sure if it was practice or not. You still looking? (MacLean Hunter Open Championship)

Only just come across this posting. We ran several races in Libre in the '80s but never got to the Open races due to engine problems. I have my entry lists, results sheets, ets, from the races we did in the Maclean Hunter championship in '84 if anyone is interested as well as other Libre races from the '70s and '80s.We used our F5000 March 76A (which we will be racing again in 2014) and VD RF82 with F3 gearbox and wheels and twin carbed big valve Pinto in '84.

Yes, I'd be very interested in entry lists, results sheets and associated paperwork. I have results from those races but only the box results from Autosport or MN showing the first few finishers. It would be great to be able to publish full results for this series on OldRacingcars.com because it became the senior libre/G8 series after the cancellation of the British Open series in 1983. Are you able to scan and send to allen@oldracingcars.com or send me photocopies or would you be willing to lend me the sheets for copying? Allen |
