Penalties for causing Red Flags
Just reading through the CAMS Stewards Reports on Saturdays Bathurst, and I am intrigued to see that drivers can be penalized for causing a Red Flag. When did this come in and what purpose does it serve?
Both Reynolds and Whincup were noted for this with identical wording: "Offence: Breach of Regulations of the V8 Supercar Sporting Regulations D6.1.11 Causing the session to be Red flagged Decision: Loss of fastest lap and excluded from further participation in the session Reason: Self explanatory" My points include, how were these two going to continue in the session anyway? Isn't a smashed up car enough penalty? Surely they are trying to set fastest times so they drive on the limit. Don't the officials want them to do that? Didn't one of the Kellys cause a red flag near start od session? They are not mentioned in the stewards redport. What happens if you cause a red flag in a race? |

I think that those penalties have been in for some time now - literally years but I'm really not sure how many. Definitely applies to Q sessions, not sure about P sessions. Couldn't tell you on the reasoning behind them.

The rules has been in for many years, in the instance of Reynolds and Whincup yesterday, yes they could not continue but we have seen in qualifying previously that a car has beached itself in a sand trap which triggered the red flag. The driver who caused the red flag is not allowed to continue in the session and they lose their fastest time.

I seem to remember it's an international rule, so that if you caused the red flag then you don't get to play anymore. You can be the cause of a red - stuck in a gravel trap, for instance - and not suffer damage. This rule means you may not rejoin when recovered from the gravel.
