Fox Sports is amazing me...
...here in the U.S. First I was surprised by Silverstone. Now, 'quite pleased that they're covering the whole Spa.
All times eastern USA: FS1 8:30 am -11:00 FS2 11:00 am-1:00 pm FS1 1:00 - 2:30 I can only hope fer Le Mans.... Last edited by jimclark; 25 Apr 2015 at 16:12. |

Besides full season live WEC deal was already announced almost month ago http://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/f...th-fox-sports/ TBH It's pretty damn likely they'll bury the races under FS2 after Cota though... Anyway, will be interesting to see how the Spa ratings compare to Silverstone's 0.1 in morning slot, and USCC. FS2 bit especially |

The last time Le Mans was fully covered here on tv was Speedvision 1999 if I recall correctly...I'm talking the full 24 hours with no breaks (aside from commercials) so I'm not exactly sure what you refer to...

But even so, I believe only 90 mins was cut off from FS1/FS2 last year but rather directed to Fox Sports GO, and before that the non-TV segments were directed to speed.com streaming. And even acknowledging that A) the reach-ability of Fox Sports 2 is almost non-existent (for example their most highest rated show last week was prime time soccer with a rating of 0.0 and 77000 viewers ) so the streaming options could actually have potential bigger audience than that joke of a channel B) Even the "greatest sportscar race on Earth" or whatever it is they call Daytona 24, only gets like 16 hours or something on TV each year in comparison It's been pretty good The regular WEC races should be fully live, but as I said, likely directed to FS2 in the late season when the buzz is over and you have those dreadful midnight broadcast slots |

Actually I think Le Mans 2001 was the last race with full 24 hour coverage on Speedvision. 1999 is viewable in its entirety on YouTube and there were breaks for both Canadian GP qualifying and a 4 hour break in the early evening in the US. That being said, the worst years of Speed were in the 02-03 period where I think only 14 or 15 hours were aired. Anyone else remember the insomniac coverage of the late 2000s where they used the RLM announcers during the middle of the night? That was great stuff. Wish they'd go back to that, even though our announcers (except Scott Pruett) are pretty good.
Anyways, regarding the present situation, the WEC is the perfect series for FS1. That is because for the most part the races are on at times where there is no competing programming (early morning and late nights). COTA was on FS2 primarily because it went up against live American sports like college football and baseball. A race in Europe in the early morning or in Asia in the middle of the night has nothing going against it. The only FS1 interruption for Spa is the rare instance of Saturday AM NASCAR qualifying. The agreement calls for full streaming on FSGO, so hopefully having that means even those of us without FS2 can continue watching uninterrupted. I know some complained about the delayed start, but they had caught up to live action by the 40 minute mark. Wish they'd just start coverage 5 minutes sooner but I'm not complaining. Calvin Fish was even communicating with Tom Kristensen during the last race and was able to give us some good information on the Audis and their strategy. |

Here are all the sportscar ratings from FOX this season
Fox Network (Live) USCC Daytona 2:00-4:00PM 0.42 (Nielsen conversion so unofficially 1,218,000) Fox Sports 1 (Live) USCC Daytona 7:00AM- 2:30PM 0.2 (245,000) Fox Sports 1 (Live) USCC Daytona 8:00PM-10:00PM 0.2 (239,000) Fox Sports 1 (Del) USCC Long Beach 4:00PM-6.00PM 0.1 (198,000) Fox Sports 1 (Live) USCC Sebring 10:30AM-12:30PM 0.1 (172,000) Fox Sports 1 (Live) WEC Silverstone 7:00AM-1:03PM 0.1 (121,000) Fox Sports 2 (Live) USCC Daytona 4:00PM- 7:51PM 0.1 (89,000) Fox Sports 1 (Del) USCC Sebring 8:00AM-10:00AM 0.1 (80,000) Fox Sports 2 (Live) USCC Sebring 12:30PM-7:00PM 0.0 (51,000) Fox Sports 1 (Del) CTSCC Sebring 9:00AM-11-00AM 0.0 (49,000) Fox Sports 2 (Live) USCC Sebring 10:00PM-11:00PM 0.0 (42,000) (Couple of weeks delayed CTSCC Daytona on FS1 didn't appear on lists at ll so likely 0.0 and way below) That 0.42 wasn't on FOX wasn't great either considering the time of the day, and you know it being network, and it also got 0.1 the year before. The delayed CotA and PLM broadcasts last year were paired with football which can explain ratings there. For comparison the final FOX family ALMS season in 2010 got full season average of 0.1 (198,000) on SPEED. 11 years ago the same average on SPEED was in 0.3, with the few CBS races getting 1.0 and NBC 0.7 ratings... Anyway when WEC moves to FS2 you will surely get all for 0.0. At Le Mans, I don't know, 0.2 on FS1 and 0.1 on FS2? Last edited by Deleted; 25 Apr 2015 at 20:26. |

Surprise! NASCAR has more American viewers than WEC. At least its being aired, somewhat.

Not sure why you brought up NASCAR as comparison, but whatever.

Advertisers care about the peak because that's when they want their brand announced to the broader audience that includes lot's of casual viewers. Only the hardcore fans(like us), which are a minority, will watch all/almost of it. I thought Fox would show the highlights on their FS1 channel, but apparently, that was not the case. 6h is too much for the casual viewer, so, 120k is pretty good for a average rating. Probably the peak was almost the double of that. I think a 50 min highlight shown on FS1 could get some pretty decent numbers. A pitty they don't show it |

Le Mans on Fox Sports 1 got 196,000 as it's best average last year (I don't have the Nielsen rating but that is likely 0.1), and on Fox Sports 2 ranging from lowest average of 38,000 (0.0) to highest 72,000 (0.1). Wish I had the peaks.
Anyway, FS used to have that 50min highlight show in the past, but they scheduled it for obscure midnight timeslots didn't they? Furthemore as others have said, if you have as poorly executed program as that where they don't actually start racing until half way the program, I can't see that being too big of a hit even if the format is otherwise more mainstream friendly. |

I think FS1 showed the highlights show this year, can't remember when but I do remember Calvin mentioning it during the live broadcast. It could definitely use some promotion. I rarely see a commercial for anything but Le Mans or NASCAR when it comes to auto racing. They just had their first Sprint Cup race on FS1 a few weeks ago, promoting the WEC would have been a good idea then and more often. Of course, FS1's ratings are generally garbage, even most of their heavily promoted shows have been doing terribly. It's just tough going up against ESPN. The key is to heavily market the niche programming, as NBCSN is doing with both F1 and the English Premier League.

Isn't 52 minute too long for a normal hour long US TV slot? I remember RLM saying something about the French being too stubborn to produce a ~45min version for the USA...

I will watch this on mute. I prefer to judge for myself whether the racing is good as opposed to being screamed at that it's a crackin race.

I want to thank the OP for this thread. I actually was unaware that WEC was being broadcast by Fox Sports. I missed Silverstone, but already have my DVR set to record Spa.
To other posts... I agree that FS1 and FS2 are not very visible or accessible. I get them via DirecTV and I never can remember where they are. It doesn't help that both have channel numbers that are very far apart from each other. Richard |
