In what series did a Rothmans Porsche No. 1 drive in 1986? I saw a photo of one today and never heard of it before, and it came without any documentation.

World Sportscar Championship (WSC). Rothmans backed the works team, from '82 to about '87 as I recall.

I believe that the Rothman's Porsche 962C also competed in the US during the heyday of Group C competition in IMSA. The team also competed at Sebring and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. I remember seeing a speed comparison between Bill Elliot's Melling Ford stocker on the banking along side the Porsche 962C, effectively comparing their speeds and relative downforce.

Rothmans Porsche 956 finished 1 2 3 at Le Mans in '82 the cars numbered 1,2 & 3 finshing in that order Ickx / Bell winning. The cars also entered all the other WCM events Same cars also entered in '83, same numbers total of 8 956's in the top 8 this time Schuppan won. Rothmans returned in 85 with Porsche 962 Ickx winning with No1 at Mugello. Stuck / Bell / Holbert in 86 at Le Mans, again No 1. The sole surviving 962 No 17 car won Le Mans in 87. There was also several races in the Daytona event, but my info on that is in the loft. They did win 86, Bell completing a double, also in 87, meaning 962's won 4 x 24 hour event in a row. All with Rothmans backing Rothmans also sponsered the Paris / Dakar Porsches. Simon |

SL.........Rothmans Porsche at Daytona...
...Juat splitting hairs but....I live in florida and haven't missed too many Daytona 24s or Sebring 12s and I don't recollect seeing the Rothmans cars here. I do know that Bell won in 86 and 87 in Al Holberts 962s sponsored by(if memeory serves correctly) Miller and Lowenbrau. Here's a great site to research with..... http://www.angelfire.com/me/krejcimar Good stuff and fond memories...check it out and enjoy!

That is one cool website... where's that been hiding??
I agree about Rothmans 956 / 962's.. not sure they ran in those colours in the USA. But the works teams must have gone over there, so what did they run in if it wasn't Rothmans??? All I keep thinking is Skol Bandits, but I know that's not right.. And they certainly did sponsor the Paris / Dakar car - I used to have the remote control model of it!! Didn't Stefan Bellof win a championship in a Rothmans?, but he was killed in one of these cars at Eau Rouge also... |

No, you are correct, Porsche did run in alternate colours in the US. The book I was refering to covered all Euro races but not US races. Maybe "Shell" would be one of the names, Miller and Lowenbrau would be the local US colours (sorry Colors in US) Skol Bandits worries me, was that not a private entered car ? It was a winner I'm sure. But for whom...... SL |

SL....Not to be argumentative...
...just damned confident in my memory (again, CONFIDENT, not POSITIVE...), Ireally don't believe a factory effort was made here in the U.S. there were so many good private teams that the shear numbers nearly guaranteed victory in the two major endoros (Daytona and Sebring). Many factory drivers even drove for some of these teams: for example, previously mentioned, Bell for Holbert Racing, Hans Stuck for bob Akin, etc. no, I don't recollect a factory effort here as there was no need...victory was assured! Again, check out this site, it is good: http://www.angelfire.com/me/krejcimar

After doing some research... I don't think works 962's ran in IMSA... from 1984, private teams ran 962's in this category. The 956 was banned..
Sponsorship was in the form of Bud, Lowenbrau, BFGoodrich amongst others. |

I think the Skoal Bandit car was run by John Fitzpatrick Racing, back in '83-4. It has been out again this year in the Group C revival run by AMOC.

The guy who drives the race car I sponsor says it is probably completely sprained after racing at Le Mans. He thinks I should buy a new one and repaint it.
I think he lacks romanticism. Since it's a 1986 we ought to get it for a real good price. I wonder who we can get for sponsors? |

Can we paint it in the Rothman Porsche colours though?
It'll take quite a whip round to come up with the swag anyway you look at it, but hey, why not dream high? |
