Film-the end is in sight!
Managed to get a new mortgage with a few quid on top to allow for my new Dig'! Looks like its going to be a 10D with a Canon 2.8 70-200mm (with image stab')and a 1.4 converter...not sure about a small wide angle sort yet. Anyone got any ideas on a handy small zoom?

hi SB, it all comes down to that paper stuff that we usually dont have enough of. Idealy a 16-35 or whatever the Canon equivelant is, but they are rather pricey. As in Nikon, I'm sure there is a 24 to something (85?) that may be a 3.5-4.5 but it ends up being a sort of bread and butter lens that can be used for a lot of situations and won.t cost the earth. Good luck with that, card choices and organizing your cds etc.

Baz, I've used a 35-135 for a while with good results. I know that canon do a 28-105 and I think a 24-85. They probably do something wider as well but my guess is that'll start to get pricey.

How about a Sigma 14mm non-fisheye prime, and a Tokina 20-35 ATX PRO. How much cash have you got for the lens?
I think Canon are bringing out a new 16-35 with this new digital model of theirs but I also think they've gone and upgraded the lens mount so whether it'll fit on the 10D I don't know. See last week's AP. |

I have a Nikon D with a Nikkor 70-300 zoom and a Sigma 28-80 zoom for close ups although 28mm in digi is equivalent of about 40mm in 35mm film terms. I find that the sigma tends to lose resolution at the edges if I go big on print size, but it is only a cheapo one (£40 from Ebay).

You could do worse than the Sigma 17-35 f2.8 EX. Dirt cheap and a good example should serve you well.
I'm using the 10D with the 17-35 as my pitlnae lens - have a look at http://tsuphoto.com/motorsport/publi.../CRW_6711.html or http://tsuphoto.com/motorsport/publi.../CRW_6538.html for examples of the 10D in combination with the lens. For that matter, any of my shortish pitlane shots on my site will be taken with the 17-35. J |

Thanks guys, it will be down to costs probably but that 17-35 Jason T, looks to have v.good sharpness and no cut-off. I had been using a Sigma 35-70mm, anything less than F8 at it was absolute rubbish with distortion and terrible sharpness-one job I did with it inside for a drivers hospitality do and the results were terrible-made me look an idiot! So I guess you get what you pay for these days. It will have to be a pretty wide angle for the digital because of the magnification when used with dig'-lets see whats about.

If you do go for the Sigma 17-35 bear in mind that mine needed to be re-chipped before it would work with my 10D, autofocus wouldn't work before the re-chipping so you might want to try the lens before you buy it.

I have heard this story regarding some lenses...I'll shop around then, Thanks.
That reminds me of when I worked in Jessups and recomended a customer try one of "our" converters (2x I think). He put it on a lens and said this isn't very good...when I tried it for myself it was absolute rubbish...I then told customers never to bother with it again! So if anyone is thinking of buying Jessups own brand of converter...Dont! |

Funny you should mention that, when I went to Jessops to get a 2x converter, they did indeed say "Don't buy ours, it's ****!"

(hi Maisie btw)
SB, have you looked into Tamron's zooms, they are supposed to be pretty good lenses, my best friend swears by them for the price/quality ratio. I have an old 90 macro of theirs that does the job fairly well but have no personal experience with the auto focus generation. With all the aftermarket companies, you might want to try to find out how the autofocusing is with a given lens and body compared to an equivelant Canon lens. I too used to work at a couple of camera stores many years back, and as a client even today, I appreciate it when an employee gives you the straight goods, or at least has the character not to make up stuff they don't know about. Maisie, No I'm not-I'm sure we could do a little photo session with you on a Mini bonnet for Mini Magazine-it would pull in thousands more readers...what do you think then...perhaps Combe before the race while the car is all nice and shiney? (or even my car???)...(DJB...am I doing all right???)

and with the D10, the pictures could be posted in a blink of an eye .....
now speaking of workflow, if you have any questions, feel free to ask, as it can be a major time consumer. Last edited by djb; 11 Sep 2003 at 21:55. |
