Goodyear back in F1?
Rumor has it that the head of Goodyear motor racing will be in Austria to gather info for re-entering the F1 scene. Many higher-ups regret the '98 pullout that left Bridgestone as the sole tire manufacturer until Michelin's re-entry this year. That would make a 3-way battle for the championship, although Brigestone may be near the end of its F1 run, leaving the 2 former tire greats to battle it out.
I wonder if Dunlop is thinking of getting its foot back in the door too? |

I think the costs related to the Firestone tire problem, primarily in the States and Canada, are turning out to be a lot more than Bridgestone had anticipated, what with lawsuits, retooling, goodwill, etc. Perhaps they would prefer to focus their efforts in CART. This would surely happen if Goodyear gets back in. I find it amazing that they would have waited this long to be involved at the very top level of motor racing.
Anyway, what's it going to cost Bridgestone NOT to be involved head to head with Michelin and Goodyear? Dunlop has been very successful with motorcycles, would they be willing to risk a hard earned reputation on F1 racing? How many passenger tires do they sell in Europe? I can tell you that you'll not find many cars in my neighborhood with a set of Dunlops aboard. |
