Yeah its tradition to have the month of may at Indy. You only need to go there once and you will know what they mean by calling it the greatest spectacle in racing.

Sure, it used to be pole weekend, another full weekend of qualifying, the whole month of May on track with 40+ cars. bump day when some cars would actually be bumped except for the last 5mins (imagine that? an actual bump from the field).
Now its pole day, a few cars qualifying on the 1st Sunday and a handful of nobody's making up the last spots on bump day. Maybe one or two don't make the show. The month of May is a misnomer it should be the 10days in May. Anyway there's no significance in 33 cars anyway right? The 'tradition of the 500' has sadly waned from it's former heights, get used to it. Jon. |

Tim explained the various traditions around the Indy 500 in an earlier thread - things like how qualifying works, etc. A lot of those activities seemed to be based on the idea that you have so many cars trying to qualify that you really need several days/weeks of running to get through them all. For sure, there aren't so many cars these days (and lets face it, there'll never again be 50+ cars looking for a grid spot), but the traditions still stand, because they themselves have become part of "The Indy 500". It's not just the race itself.
Actually, it's pretty interesting when the people of the New World care more about traditions and titles than the people of the Old World, but maybe that's a discussion for the history buffs among us |

Lets' consider that, for many contenders it's often the only/first race of the year, so they need to get started with the cars.

The Indy 500's month is a glorious tradition, and one that needs preserving. Ocne the month starts you get the ebb and flow of it all, and the excitement of Pole Day, followed by the tension of Bump Day and the nailbiting week up to the race itself. It's one of the things that gives it such heritage.

Go to Tim's thread about the qualifying rules and procedures, and I think you'll see why it takes so much time. If you follow along with all of the action, I think you'll find it quite enjoyable, and interesting! Welcome to the forum gti5notrkt! Nice post boots! |
