C5R not eligible in world GT championship?
http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=02956818
"Even Chevrolet is involved in discussions, though its American Le Mans Series-winning Corvette C5-R would not be eligible under present rules." Anyone know why it wouldn't be eligible? Isn't the ACO GTS and FIA GT rules basicaly the same? |

I don't think this is anything new- I'm sure I've read statements in the past- maybe a year or two back- by Ratel, saying that for whatever reason (I'm sure it was explained at the time, but I can't recall what the exact explanation was), the C5R isn't eligible for FIA GT races

Here is something I have gathered...
According to the rules, only one model can be homologated...there are Z06s being run in the lower class therefore the C5R could not be homologated into the upper class... this still should allow for the car to be classified as a race specific model though...but maybe then they couldnt call it a corvette? http://www.fia.com/resources/documen...04_Art_251.pdf |

From what I recall, the FIA's ruling was that the C5-R racecar is too different from the road car. Also, are there 25 C5-R road cars? (not just C5s, that's not enough) Just to add, of course Chevrolet can start afresh with the new C6, and build a fully FIA "kosher" car. And then... Last edited by cybersdorf; 14 Apr 2004 at 18:11. |

How did Prodrive's 550 comply with the reg then...it also has an enlarged motor, a new front and rear subframe, and with all panels replaced with carbon(except the roof).....

Hmm, what was it with the C5-R, I can't recall, was it that not enough of the original chassis structure had been retained? I think they claimed the car was basically a "tubeframer". But I could be wrong.

If that was the case none of the cars would qualify. Hardly anything on the cars are retained from production.

besides the original production Vette was a not a unitbody car to begin with, all they did was add on the racing bits to the origial hydroform chassis and put on a purposeful set of suspension bits. besides, 550 production car is a tube-frame car to begin with....

I still think the 550/575GTC are alot closer to their road cars in overall size then the vette's. The C5R's must be 150mm wider then a C5.
Anyone know if the C5R has the engine moved back in the chassis any? |

Yeah, I read somewhere that Embassy Racing were planning to run their 'vette in the British GT championship this year, with hopes to progress to the FIA GT Champioship next year, and then get invited to Le Mans in 2006. I might be wrong - will go check the other threads...
Ah-ha! http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=50942 Ahhh wait - that's only a C5, not C5-R Last edited by stoney; 15 Apr 2004 at 07:36. |

One of the main problems with the C5-R is that it has a widened track-width to meet the maximum allowable width for GTS cars. This is not possible in other categories including the new set of rules.
The engine in the C5-R was lowered and setback significantly as a unit and the gearbox repositioned. But why continue with a car that cannot compete anymore? It seems GM would do better starting a new car, the C6-R, to take advantage of the new rules. They will surely be encouraged by the success they had with with old model C5-R. |

well P&M the C5R builders have 3 road versions built on the launch year of the c5r, do they really need 25?
i am sure it is a matter of double homologation of a car in two classes the ferrari 550 has been pushed from gts by the 575 officially hasn't it- so the fia can have 2 models in two classes? or am i of my stones on this one? |

They are separate models, separately homologated - in FIA GT they run alongside in one class. GTS is ACO, don't get the two confused. The 550 is also homologated in ACO-GT whereas it could not be homologated in FIA-N-GT (engine too big). |
