Most of the teams lease them. Being cast iron blocks, many of the engines have apparently been racing for up to 20 years!

The category engine doesn't need to have pistons, so...

4-ROTOR 26B NATURALLY ASPIRATED
650 HP
10,000 RPM Limit
Late 13B side housings
Full Peripheral Port
Fully Dynamically Balanced
Ceramic Apex Seals
Race Bearings
Blueprinted
$39,525 USD
https://www.definedautoworks.com/maz...s-4-rotor.html

Seems reasonable.

A welcome return to the glory days of the Australian Touring Car Championship, that were arguably unfairly cut short.

Probably thought they pushed their luck once, didn’t want to risk it twice especially as they didn’t win in 83

Getting caught for that would have been a shocking look for Moffat himself and especially Mazda

And the reason the car did not qualify for Hardies Heroes in '83.

A couple of laps on their own on the track would have been a dead giveway.

Well the gamble didn't pay off then if they failed to qualify. They didn't really think it through, they should have done their homework beforehand

Hardies Heroes was a run off for the top 10 cars from qualifying.

Moffat qualified 14th.

On purpose?

Makes sense, as you say the cheat would have been a dead giveaway on the hardies heroes lap.

On a side note, why didn’t Moffat need a pit stop at Wanneroo in 1984? 13B helped pull him up the hill so he didn’t need to run a light tank?

A naming rights sponsor with a history in developing successful race engines will have its branding emblazoned on the cam covers of Supercars category V8.
I'm guessing it will be a Repco engine, as that would make sense with their series sponsorship and it would be a nice historical tie-in.

Quote:
But the category V8 engine is not intended to be a mandatory control powerplant that all teams would have to use.

For instance, a factory-backed team such as DJR Team Penske could continue to develop its own Ford engines, although it might have to shift away from the current pushrod to the DOHC Coyote under Gen3.

It does appear extremely unlikely – in contradiction to earlier expectations – the Coyote could be the basis for the category engine. That follows comments from Ford’s global motorsport boss Mark Rushbrook in a Wheels magazine interview.

“We think it would be confusing for the sport, for the fans, if there was a Ford or Ford-based engine in another brand’s body,” Rushbrook was quoted as saying.
https://autoaction.com.au/2020/09/24...n3-category-v8

Clear as mud.

So is Gen 3 going to require DOHC engines?

The category engine will be a DOHC engine apparently... Perhaps a BMW engine, like this Judd HK which is based on the BMW S65? (Thankfully not using BMW OE road bearings, lol!)

No murmurs of V10s or V12s which is a shame, given this would be the perfect opportunity to do that.

Been a lot of talk about the Gen 3 Spec engine on here but what about the look of the cars. Pretty obvious we are going to have 2 door coupes but should they be like the current Mustang (but with lower roof!) or go a bit radical with a DTM style body kit (sort of). In the 1980s Aussie Touring cars had flared guards and they looked tougher than the current Supercars.

Looking "tough" is not important.

WRC "toughened" up the look of the cars, and it makes no difference at all.

It's lame to focus on superficial aspects.

They are faster, more like old WRCars, which is nice though.

A 1.6 turbo could be a good basis for the Gen3 Supercars engine?

The V8 engine is the DNA of supercars, its what the majority of fans want in Australia.

I think a V8 engine with KERS might be worthwhile or hell even a V8 engine with P2P electric battery.

I think Australian fans WANT V8s based on the past 40 years or our racing DNA, however it will take time to sway people around and realise that change is happening.

Me personally is sad to see the end of V8 racing inevitably when it happens.

DNA is horse****. It's an attitude held onto with a vice like grip from a small, less knowledgeable motor racing community and fans.

It's keep as a notion to keep status quo, and doesn't change because CAMS/MA don't know any better.

Australian fans like F1 more than supercars. It's the leftovers that get attached to supercars.

You ask any supercars fan why 5lt V8s became the prominent engine in the atcc, they wouldn't have a clue. Not just that, probably even figures within the supercars industry wouldn't know.

Broad sweeping statements without a shred of evidence.

Pronouncements that mystify.

You are so confident in your statements I feel like you should get your own forum and you can have an echo chamber with yourself to continue hearing the sound of your own voice.

How do you measure this knowledge?

It is a series of questions like, "Name the last car to start a ATCC race that had less than 8 cylinders?" or "Which brand of car won the most heat races in the 1992 ATCC?"
