getting hold of used slicks...

Hiya,

I'm after some used/part worn front 13" slicks from a F3 or similar..

What are the chances of being able to find a set of 4?

How do race teams normally dispose of their tires?

Cheers!

what are you going to put them on. note, they are designed for lighweight single-seaters - not saloons which have a different construction.

A 550kg mini, 150bhp turbo mini (trackday only).

I know they are going to be far from ideal, but its a cheap option and it will be interesting to see if they are better than road tyres.

surely they'll be too wide and also your car will be too soft by a factor about 10,000:1 to get any heat into them. try ff zetec slicks, prob fronts all round.

The car will be too soft?

Why would FF Zetec ones be better?

Its an experiment... hence wanting to get them for free.

I run FF Zetec Front slicks on my MG Midget, car weight 580Kg and they are perfect. Find a Ford test and go along and ask the teams for some fronts failing that try and find a team near you. They are ideal as teams only run them for 20 or so laps. When you clean them with a scraper they are as good as new. I have had them with the original moulding marks on them! If you get really stuck send me a PM and I will get you some.

OK, F3 radials are very hard and stiff as the Dallara chassis is mega-stiff. To get any heat in them is a nightmare on any other car. You just won't do it so the grip won't be there.
The FF Zetec tyres are a softer compound and crossply so will reward a more sideways driving style.
They will still be too hard for your soft suspension but will be miles better than the F3 tyres. I suggested fronts solely because they will fit better.

Thanks for your input guys...

The physical size of the front tyres are not a problem (f3 is about 180mm if I read the rules correctly). I had no idea about them being very hard, I was expecting to find them too soft if anything, shows what I know!

I'll trawl the net tonight looking for teams, thou judging by the responce I got last week from the F3 guys I might well be sending Mike a PM!

F3s run 10/11 in at the back and 8/9 at the front.

the other thing of course is that the F3 tyres will be radials, you really need corssply's as JR says.
You should be able to get some from the better off FF teams for free, or certainly don't pay more than fiver a tyre from the tyre fitters.

Alex,
A bit late on this one, but we use F3 size Michelins and sell them part-used to Hot Rod racers for £10 each

imull has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
out of curiosity, why would he be better with crossply's compared to radials?

it due to them being thinner and softer so he will get more heat into the tyres and work them better. No point having tyres that dont do anything.
