Monster Garage
From CART.COM...
INDIANAPOLIS (November 14, 2003) – If the California Department of Transportation had Jesse James and his band of renegade car builders from the Discovery Channel’s mega-hit series Monster Garage on their staff, every highway line in the entire Golden State could be re-done in about two days. James and his Monster Garage crew accepted the challenge of turning a Champ Car into a working street-line painter for an upcoming installment of the popular program, which is the second-highest rated show of all cable series among males 18-49. The crew took a former Walker Racing Champ Car chassis and transformed it into the world’s fastest street-line painter, successfully demonstrating it at the Irwindale Speedway oval in Irwindale, California earlier this week. The crew included Rocketsports Racing team owner and potential Champ Car World Series owner Paul Gentilozzi, who flew to James’ California shop last month to help oversee the design and production of the car as well, while PK Racing engineer John Ward was on hand to supervise the demonstration phase of the project. The car ended up turning laps around the half-mile Irwindale track at over 90 mph with James behind the wheel, laying out perfect street lines. The Champ Car, which squared off against a traditional RoadLazer street-line painter during its demonstration, ran on short-oval racing tires such as those used at this year’s Champ Car event at the Milwaukee Mile, which were provided to the show by Bridgestone. The Champ Car episode, which is broadcast on Monday nights from 9-10 p.m. ET/PT, is slated to air November 24 on the Discovery Channel. |

Why Irwindale? Cuz they tore up Riverside and planted houses there, Willow Springs is way the Hell and gone out in the Mojave Desert, and while Jesse would probably love a clandestine bash through the streets of Long Beach, the Fuzz would probably object!

Sorry, Willow Springs is the only road course left in the LA area. The Riverside road course was big in the days of Phil Hill, the Shelby "Suckmobile" and all the other good stuff. Paramount Ranch disappeared sometime around 1960.

"Monster Garage" was on, sure enough. But they were making a Cadillac into a demolition-derby car.

I watched it last night...great episode! The car said both C^RT, and ChampCar. The commentator repeatedly mentioned ChampCar racing and called it a Champ Car numerous times. There were LOTS of film clips of Tags driving on street courses...not a single second of oval footage! All Tags footage since Gentilozzi was on the episode. Great exposure all around!

I liked it. There was a lot of Champ Car exposure. That would have been a kick to drive even if they did only get it up a little over 90 MPH.

It was awesome, the narrator introduced the car as a champcar which was great and he said something like "similarly to a formula 1 car or an indycar, a champcar is an openwheel racecar" Plus great shots of the rockectsports car.

Any of you gearheads notice the pushrod Ford sitting in the back of that thing? Probably a crate 400" crate small block.
"... powered by REAL Ford?, F150 Ford?..." *****in' headers, too bad they can't use em with a turbo. Remember how neat the Offy side pipes looked on the old Watsons? By the way, 90 mph is pretty good on a 1/2 mile short track, the record there is 120 mph+, in a 490 cube Supermod. |

Female dogin? Methinks the profanity filter is a bit uptight, we used that term in the late 40s and didn't get kicked out of school.

INDIANAPOLIS (November 26, 2003) – Monster Garage’s popular host Jesse James and his gang of automotive extremists converted a 750hp Champ Car into a working street-line painter last night on the ever popular Discovery Channel, with the episode delivering one of the highest ratings of the season.
The hit cable show followed the crew, which included Rocketsports Racing owner Paul Gentilozzi, through the entire process of transforming a former Walker Racing Champ Car chassis into the world’s fastest street-line painter, drawing in 1,097,000 households at 1.2 with a 2 share. The show’s 1.2 rating eclipsed the 2003 average of 1.1 at 969,000 households and ranked third overall on the night among Monday’s programs for men ages 18-49. The Champ Car-driven episode will re-air on the Discovery Channel following the “Day After Thanksgiving Marathon” on Monday, November 29 at 9:00 p.m. and midnight ET, and again on Saturday December 27th at 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. ChampCar ChampCars ChampCar ChampCars ChampCar ChampCars ChampCar ChampCars Copyright © 2003, CART, Inc. I hope you get a chance to see it in Canada. I thought it was pretty good. |

We saw it last night. BTW: They said the engine was a 351.
I thought it was interesting that they had that guy who built his own car for the Indy500 in '82 all by himself and qualified it! Due to the damaged they caused the the carbon fibre that was probably the most costly Monster Garage ever. I don't know why Jesse didn't push it atleast a little bit... |
