Round 3 - Monza (ITA), 22/23 May

next weekend Monza plays host to the WTCC. 3 chicanes and a very small risk of a safety car this time by (but does happen), i got a question due to the changes i saw from another race, is it the normal GP track we are using thish time by?

I expect them to use the same layout as they've done every year. the new layout is probably only for motorcycle.

Extra drivers at Monza:

Quote:
Argentine Touring Car star Leonel PernÃ*a will drive a fourth Chevrolet Cruze LT in the WTCC Race of Italy, at Monza on May 23rd. He will be the first Argentine to race in the FIA World Championship.
The 34-year old driver from Tandil (Buenos Aires) has emerged as a top runner in the competitive TC2000 Championship in Argentina from 2006. At the wheel of a Honda Civic car run by Equipo Petrobras he claimed two race victories and in 2009 was vice-champion behind his team-mate José MarÃ*a López.
Chevrolet Motorsport boss Eric Nève explained: “It is a privilege for us to have PernÃ*a at Monza. In our strategy towards conquering the WTCC title this year, it is useful to enter a fourth car in selected events, entrusted to drivers who have proven pedigrees in touring car racing. Moreover, the presence of Leonel can boost the visibility of the WTCC in South America and the image of Chevrolet in a key market like Argentina.”
PernÃ*a commented: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to race in the world’s top touring car championship and with a front-running team like Chevrolet. This is an unexpected and wonderful chance for me and I hope to contribute to the team’s success in Monza. I know the level in the WTCC is very high but I am confident that my TC2000 experience will prove useful.”

It will be interesting to see how Pernia will don in WTCC.

Quote:
The field of BMW Independent drivers in Monza will count on two additional competitors: Kristian Poulsen and Fabio Fabiani.
The 34-year old Dane will start in Italy his WTCC campaign that will last for the rest of the season; he will be at the wheel of a BMW 320si car run by his own team Poulsen Motorsport. A former race winner in the Danish Touring Car Championship and a podium finisher in the 2007 and 2010 FIA European Touring Car Cup, Poulsen took part in last year’s WTCC for the Liqui Moly Team Engstler, claiming his best result at Pau where he finished 10th.
Fabiani, 35 from Italy, will drive Proteam Motorsport’s third BMW 320si car alongside team’s regulars Sergio Hernández and Stefano D’Aste. Fabiani who had won the 2008 FIA Touring Car Cup for the Super Production class, made his first WTCC appearance in 2009 at Imola also with Proteam.

Two Belgian drivers at Zolder:

Chevrolet has announced that it will enter a fourth RML-run Cruze in the WTCC round at Zolder, with local Vincent Radermecker at the wheel.

Quote:
Belgian driver Pierre-Yves Corthals, who was a WTCC regular in 2007 and 2008, will make a one off return to the FIA World Championship on the occasion of his home event at Zolder on June 20th.
Like in 2007 and 2008, Corthals will be driving a petrol-powered SEAT León car run by Luc Marchetti’s Exagon Racing and backed by SEAT Belgique.
“I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to make a comeback with Exagon and in the WTCC. Many of the best memories of my racing career are infact linked to this team and this championship. The WTCC is the series that suits the best my idea of motor sport: top-level races in which drivers must fight hard for every fraction of a second. I will give all my best during the Zolder event, because I wish with all my heart to match the expectations of the people who support me in this programme,” said Corthals.

With only 2 laps I expect he crashed or had technical problems. Same for Barth.

A brake disk exploded. He got the car back to the pits though, so should be fine for tomorrow.

I thought the world touring car championship was sposed to be boring?

great finish to a generally good race (not BTCC fun style but good enough). maybe evidence that some tracks (Morocco, curitiba) encourage boring racing, and the great tracks make for better racing (monza for example)

anyhow, alot of good fun was had! yippee.

Fantastic onboard footage of Tarquini's start. He just drove around everyone like they were standing still.

He has a TDi...

I thought the race was very dull apart from the last lap which was golden.
