According to World Rally Radio Markko Märtin is stuck in second gear on SS3 and has thus lost well over a minute on that stage alone.

Sebastien Loeb is out after getting lost on a road section and running out of fuel!

Solberg is out too on SS4 after breaking his suspension (seems like the Turkish roads are as rough as previously advertised)

Sainz is not close behind Rovanpera. Gilles Panizzi in 5th place overall, not bad on gravel.

Hi , does anybody knows about the points in Group N in this rally ? There is guy named Saulius Girdauskas from my country leading Group N category, Go Saulius !
Marrko Martin is HOT too - but shame he lost so much time - now he is very fast.

After SS6

1. H ROVANPERÄ 1:14:50.5
2. C SAINZ +20.7
3. F DUVAL +29.5
4. T MÄKINEN +31.4
5. G PANIZZI +37.9
6. R BURNS +56.5
7. C MCRAE +1:03.3
8. A SCHWARZ +1:07.1

Gronholm is down in 19th, nearly 11min off the pace. Mind you if the leaders come to grief over the next couple of days he might just pick up a point or too.

Rovanperä won SS7 and Sainz SS8 (trimming Rovanperä's lead to about 22 secs in the process).

1 Harri Rovanperä
2 Carlos Sainz +22.1
3 Tommi Makinen +48.3
4 François Duval +51.4
5 Richard Burns +58.5
6 Gilles Panizzi +1:05.5 (pretty good for an asphalt specialist)
7 Colin McRae +1:26.1
8 Freddy Loix +2:09.2
9 Toni Gardemeister +2:26.7
10 Markko Martin +3:36.3

Gronholm 13th trying to make up for lost time.

Stage 10 update

Rovanperä loses over 7 minutes on SS10 with some sort of technical problem (suggestion is it may be the shock absorbers). Makinen loses over a minute and drops a few places, thus Burns goes from 5th to 2nd in just 1 stage (!)

Thus (after SS10):
1 C SAINZ
2 R BURNS +1:02.6
3 F DUVAL +1:06.8
4 G PANIZZI +1:21.2
5 T MÄKINEN +1:45.1
6 C MCRAE +1:47.5
7 T GARDEMEISTER +2:50.9
8 F LOIX +3:12.4
9 M MÄRTIN +3:45.5
10 H ROVANPERÄ +7:03.3

This rally has been described by one as 'tougher than the Safari' - not difficult to see why. "Anything can happen, and probably will "

Looks as if this is going to be a "Last Man Standing" rally -- Harri made a good run and I'm glad to see him back up front (for awhile anyway). But it'll be great if Sainz wins! Won't Ford be absolutely sorry they turfed him out.

El Matador takes command after Day 2, Rovanpera out of the rally with a broken shock absorber. Citreon proved that it can go on gravel.

Really suprised by the pace of the Citroens - if they pull a win off here then they must be title favourites. In saying that though, they are on an even footing with the rest because Turkey is a new event.

So far the Rally of Turkey is tough on suspensions. A whole bunch of cars broke wishbone and shock absorbers left and right. The Rally of Turkey is very close to Greece's tough rock gravel.

"If we had another week, we could probably win this rally," he joked!! MArkko Martin with my quote of the rally! Doggedly pulling back time after bad luck on first day.

After SS17 with one more stage to go:

1. SAINZ-MARTI
2. BURNS-REID +01'05"20
3. DUVAL-PREVOT +01'58"70
4. McRAE-RINGER +02'28"30
5. PANIZZI-PANIZZI +02'51"20
6. MARTIN-PARK +03'40"30
7. GARDEMEISTER-LU +05'02"40
8. MAKINEN-LINDSTR +07'22"90
9. GRONHOLM-RAUTIA +11'21"00
10. LOIX-SMEETS +11'35"00

Let's hope nothing breaks on the Sainz Citroen on the last stage. The gap is probably too large for Burns to catch now.

Trivia question: when and where was Carlos Sainz last win?

Provisional result and standings

Provisional result (after 18 stages):
1 Carlos Sainz
2 Richard Burns +47.9
3 François Duval +1:46.5
4 Colin McRae +2:09.1
5 Gilles Panizzi +2:41.6
6 Markko Martin +3:24.9
7 Toni Gardemeister +5:01.0
8 Tommi Makinen +7:18.6
9 Markus Grönholm +10:52.2
10 Freddy Loix +11:40.4

So provisionally Carlos Sainz has his 25th WRC victory .

Assuming that there are no changes to the above result the driver's championship now stands as:

1 Richard BURNS 18
2 Colin MCRAE 17
3 Carlos SAINZ 16
4 Markko MÄRTIN 13
5 Sébastien LOEB 12
6 Markus GRÖNHOLM 10
7 Tommi MÄKINEN 9
8 François DUVAL 8
9 Gilles PANIZZI 4
10= Cédric ROBERT 3
10= Petter SOLBERG 3
10= Toni GARDEMEISTER 3
13 Armin SCHWARZ 1

His last official win was the Rally of Argentina last year. However if you were to discount that given that he was only awarded victory after Gronholm and Burns were disqualified then his last true win was the Cyprus Rally in 2000 (with Ford).

Now Citroen proved that it can win on gravel too. El Matador won his 25th rally of his career. Now Citroen has strut its stuff on both tarmac and gravel and is reckon to win more and rival Peugeot is sweating right now after seeing that Citroen is a major player in the World Rally Championship. I am betting that Colin will win the Acropolis rally in June in a Citroen. Give a hand to tarmac king Gilles Panizzi because he never been higher than 6th in gravel rallies. He finished fifth overall in the Turkish rally.

Looks pretty competitive so far!!

Excellent result for Citroen and Carlos Sainz. Sainz really deserved this win after such a crappy season with Ford last year!!

Now Citroen needs to get a decent website AND some up to the minute PR! Peugeot must have a major staff involved in PR as I get their stuff literally as soon as a stage/leg is over. Citroen sends nothing.

I bet Ford is really sorry they were so rude to Sainz. I would love him to come in Top 3 in the championship just to show them.

Harri did his best. He is still my man.
