A fairly uneventful session, Schumacher is back ofn top after the blip of Imola. Its good to see Hakkinen competitive again, but it will be interesting to see if he can sustain it for the race.

yes,he is definately on top.The only guy who looked like going as good as him was hakkinen on his last lap.Coulthard was .5 seconds slower all the way.BTW i think a saw mclaren make a change to the suspension setup before MH last lap.DID any 1 see this??Moreover i have heard that the mclaren pulls away faster than the ferrari. So it will be an interesting start.

So much for Jaguar's pace yesterday. I'm sure PDLR is wondering what he's gotten himself into, Burti is almost a second faster in the Prost, (and faster than Alesi)

Yawn. We're back to a Who Cares Anyway Grid.
The only thing I found really instructive was Mika's comment that he had set his astonishing last lap time after he turned the traction control OFF. If others find this solution, perhaps tomorrow's race will be less of a parade than otherwise. (I am thinking of Montoya most particularly.) |

That's the positive spin to this, Liz.
I was actually thinking along the lines of "Juan-Pablo - what were you playing at?" |

I hope Juan follows the advice.
That way maybe Juan will only be two or three tenths slower than Ralf |

if hakkined did run his last lap without Tc,he sure did a very good job.I didnt see his last lap.But i saw the arrows team trying to do laps without TC.it just goes to show that the TC systems that the team are using at present are not the best.Im sure in about a month, all the systems would have been perfected and the quickest way would be wit hteh TC on.

Enrique Bernoldi is said to have switched his TC off at the last 2 runs...and it could be seen when he is fighting real hard with the car, yet end up improving his time...!

I think Burti outqualifying Alesi after only a couple of days in the car is still one of the biggest stories.
especially for those who rate Alesi so highly. |

Boring session, absolutely pants coverage from ITV, and the awful sound of a V10 engine polluted by traction control.
Still, good job by Ralf to get up to 5th with the problems Williams are having, and very impressive by Burti to outqualify Alesi in his first qualifying at Prost. And of course Saint Fernando deserves praise for qualifying 18th again, and Raikkonen was very quick too. |

Liz,
from what ive heard the williams team were not ready with their TC are are not using it this weekend. So what mr. toya achieved was the best he could. The track dosent suit the williams car anyway. And i dont think the teams will want to run the race without the TC.It may work for a few laps. But with tyre wear and the 60 odd laps, they will be better of using the TC. |

I missed qualifying but by all accounts I didn't miss much.
What is interesting is: 1) All this fuss about TC; "THE SEASON STARTS HERE" etc. Well, nothing's changed! No really BIG surprises around, is there? 2) the fact that Williams arn't using TC (i heard that rumour too, laxman), NOR ARE MINARDI despite theiur testing, and Bernoldi and Hakinnen TURNING THEIR TC OFF and STILL going faster. 3) TOLD you Burti was good! Out-qualifying Alesi in a car his compatriot has been driving and developing for TWO YEARS that HE'S been driving for less than two WEEKS. Remarkable. 4) Alonso! No TC, ****ty engine, who cares! TM did well to qualify too! |

Stunning lap by Michael to take pole. As always, when it counts...he's the man who more often than not can pull it of.
Good to see Mika back in the fray...just hope he doesent stall on the grid this time ! Ralf pulled of a pretty amazing lap to take 5th and then improve his time in the dying seconds considering the Williams is really of the pace, compared to the the big two in Barcelona. He pretty much dragged that William to the third row. Luciano Burti - WOW. He was quicker than Alesi each time Alesi set a lap actually...Good to see someone rattling Jean's cage I hope it's not another boring Spanish Grand prix though...and hopefully the coverage can be a bit better than it was today. |

My vote of the "best" goes to Alonso !!
He really ignore that he's driving the "WELL-KNOWN-WORST-CAR-OF-THE-GRID" !!!!! Beating in style 2 benettons and 1 Jaguar (Marques doesn't count..) !!!!!! And the spanish TV were only showing PDLR in the Jag... |

I heard that Ralf WASNT using TC but JPM WAS. Does this add to the Ralf v JPM argument or the TC argument?

I beg to differ, Tarso Marquez DOES count! Considering the problems he had all weekend and NO TC, I think he did very well to qualify! Well done that man.
