I don't think that the skills that make either driver great can be easily summarised, nor would knowing what they are necessarily mean that Ralf or Alister (or anybody else) could actually put it into practice.

Strange question,as I'm sure they all help each other whenever they can.Its a pity Michael didnt have the bottle to accept Colin's offer for a race/rally format for charity.

Colin and Alastair worked together when they both had subasrus on the network Q a couple of years ago. Alastair set up a car and Colin jumped in and said it was perfect. So the McCrae part of the original post is wrong!

How much of top level driving is instinctive? Assuming that they wanted to, could Michael or Colin explain what they do?
I drive on the road largely by instinct. I find it very hard to explain to my wife or daughter why I have jinked the wheel, touched the brakes, or decided to change down at a particular point. Transpose this to driving ten times as hard at four times the speed and there comes a point where you can't pass it on. |
