im not sure a big crowd of 30k will exactly stick it up our noses. imagine year 3 when 10k turn up

but the upgrade would be good for EC

I really don't think EC could handle F1.

Says it all really. Any upgrade is good news, but the thread title is a pretty long bow to draw. Especially if the upgrade doesn't involve lights!

The main racing circuit should be capable of meeting the requirements of all forms of motor racing up to Formula One, MotoGP and Australia's leading domestic series.
Cochrane's constant bleating about a race at Homebush must be worrying the ARDC.

I must be weird. I actually like EC the way it is.

Except for the raw sewerage smell from the tip.

The EC circuit itself isnt that bad - It's just the fact that it is in the middle of no where and has 'that smell' means that it will never be as successful as a inner-city circuit like Albert Park or Adelaide.

Homebush would be a better option for a big event - not because the circuit itself will be better, but because the infrastructure is there to handle big crowds.

The problem with motor racing facilities is that people don't want to live near them - but don't want to travel out of the city to attend them. This is why we are seeing the increased popularity of street circuits in Australia and NZ.

The smell would keep away Formula 1. Its repulsive to a commoner like me, the likes of Bernie would not stand for it. It really is that bad.

Maybe if they spent $1bn on the place, gold plate everything and build an integrated lighting system, it might get one round.

But the article only talks about F1-standard, not about actually expecting to hold an F1 race.

The only way that Eastern Creek could be bought up to the standards required of Formula 1 would be to nuke the entire site from orbit (just to be sure) and completely start again.

The only circuit here in Australia other than the Melbourne Street Circuit worthy of an F1 race is Bathurst but I'm guessing F1 cars wouldn't make it down the Esses.

Bathurst would be far too dangerous for the wusses that race in F1 to attack

The best solution I think would be for Melbourne and Adelaide to share it on alternate years - with temporary lighting.

That way it doesn't get stagnate in the one city, and remains a novelty event. Hella tested the portable lights at Calder (a much smaller scale) recently and proved that they could be put up and packed up in 2 days.

Would it be amazing to have the Australian Grand Prix rotate between 5 street circuits in 5 years - all with portable street lighting.

Perth, Adelaide, Albert Park, Homebush, and Surfers Paradise.

in what way do you mean, ' the middle of nowhere'. Eastern Creek is one of the most accessible circuits in this country.

F1 at Eastern Creek has two thumbs up for me.

Good on the NSW Government having some forsight to look at permanent options rather go down the street circuit boredom

What have you EC haters got against the track? From a drivers point of view I love it. Fast corners, slow corners all very tricky and lots of passing opportunities. There is always good racing there. Good access too.

From a spectators point of view - who cares. go there for Fri/Sat to soak up the atmosphere then watch the race at home on the telly, if you're lucky you could watch the race at the track and still make it home in time to watch Ten's telecast. Bring it on I say.

You are forgetting that a large percentage of people attending Grand Prix's are there on corporate dollars. Corporates like to take clients to events that are close to the CBD and don't stink like a tip.

Accessable - I guess from the CBD it would only be 1.5 hours battling traffic in the car. It serves the population of Western Sydney but are they the ones that can afford the grandstand seats, and $99 day tickets to the GP. I don't like to generalise, but the types of fans you find paying for grandstand seats in Melbourne aren't usually from the western suburbs. They are successful businessmen, corporates, the wealthy, the underworld, and the occasional politician.

Does EC have solid public transport links?? Albert Park is serviced by the old St Kilda rail-line (now dedicated tram-way) and also tram services along St Kilda Rd. People only have the option of getting to EC by car, and possibly buses. Adelaide and the Gold Coast circuits are in the city centre and serviced by the city infrastructure.

In my view, for a successful F1 event to occur in Australia, it needs to be smack bang in the middle of a capital city that can be easily accessed by everyone.

if the GP moves from albert park (god i hope it doesnt) then the next best circuit without a doubt would be phillip island.

an F1 race there would be spectacular!
