SEAT in ETCC

SEAT are rumoured to be entering the ETCC in 2003 with a new 4wd Toledo. The 4wd part depends if the other manufacturers give consent to it being allowed. We may see a 4wd back in the BTCC if were lucky!

4wd is because of its WRC background
Quote from Autosport;
"SEAT is keen to use four-wheel drive technology from its rallying background on the car, which is to be run in-house by the team that managed its Cordaba WRC machine."

Thing is will they be succesful in the ETCC as they were not in WRC, although if I'm thinking rightly they were succesful in National rallying?

SEAT were pretty successful at Britsh and International level with the Ibiza kit car but never realy cut it with the Cordoba WRC. No doubt part of that is down to not having the $$$ to throw at it like Subaur, Ford, etc.

And you have to wonder why with VW at the top? Skoda must have been there priority.

I think you'll find they are Spanish although they are owned now by VW.

Possible ideas for VAG attack on Motorsport;

SKODA-----------WRC
SEAT------------ETCC/BTCC/TC
AUDI------------DTM/LE MANS
VW--------------F1?

Kinda makes senss considering the first three are already true and VAG wouldn't want their manufacturers competing against each other.

SKODA-----------WRC (true and correct)
SEAT------------ETCC(already been confirmed)
AUDI------------DTM/LE MANS(its happening)
VW--------------BTCC(im sure that alan gow had vw lined up to do btcc but they backed out because they weren't happy with the new regulations,or they weren't sure of them):confused:

Now, that doesent sound any sensible does it... Volkswagen in the BTCC and SEAT in the ETCC, with the same rules? Why? Does SEAT sell more cars in the UK than Volkswagen does?

VW are a top seller I think - especially with the Golf and Passat models. But VW need only spend money once - then 'swap' bodyshells.

Well I cant see the logic of letting SEAT take the big international championship and let Volkswagen run in a smaller national...

Ohh, Johan you're gonna cause arguments saying the BTCC is a 'smaller, national championship'.!!!!! Anyway, with the new ETCC and BTCC rules being so similar, i can't see SEAT entering the ETCC and not the BTCC if they wanted to. VW would have to spend effectively twice the money if they entered as themselves. I reckon SEAT for the BTCC, and VW for F1! Stop sniggering at the back, knowsley!

Well, it is a national championship, which, if things goes as manufacturers say, will be smaller than the ETCC next year...

And does it not seem a bit strange for Volkswagen to decide that SEAT would go for the BTCC when they have been with in developing rules for the "new" ETCC? Remember, Volkswagen makes the call for SEAT...

I can't see the same company building two different cars for the same rules. It might be like Vauxhall and Opel and Holden with the Vectra. The same car, just in England its called a Vauxhall, in Germany and Opel and in Australia a Holden. I reckon they will just build the one car, badge it Seat in the ETC and VW in the BTCC, or it might be Skoda WRC, Seat ETC, Audi Sportscars and VW in the WRC Super 1600.

Also, i wouldn't worry about the ETC taking cars from the BTCC. GM will probably get Opel for the ETC if they run, leaving Vauxhall for England, I can't see MG going outside England, and Peugeot UK always seem to do their own thing. And i reckon that with Nissan on the ETC board, and renault rumoured for a BTCC return, as Renault owns Nissan, they will get Nissan to make cars for the ETC and Renaults for the BTCC, like with the TWR Rovers and Jags of the early 80s
