Disappearing Tracks

Over the last few years in NSW alone we have seen the loss of Amaroo Park, shortly Oran Park, Liverpool Speedway, Sydney Showgrounds Speedway, Newcastle Motordrome and in Canberra the Tralee Speedway, all in the name of surbubia. I wonder how many more race circuits and speedways we will lose over the next few years?

What about Warwick Farm, Caversham, Catalina Park, Lakeside (although it still exists), Hume Weir, Surfers Paradise, enough people on here believe Sandown is only a matter of time, Brooklyn Speedway, Claremont Speedway (replaced I admit), I can't think of any others at the moment. Many would add Calder and AIR as well.
Just that list alone is enough to make you cry. When you add the hundreds of road course lost over time.

Catalina is still there but it is disappearing slowly. The grass is growing over the track in parts and some of it has collapsed, but it is well worth a walk around. You can almost hear the Repco headed grey motors screaming.

Yeah, did that in September while on a 'road trip' through NSW & Sthn Qld. But being ignorant Taswegians we walked around it in the opposite direction!
Still impressed though with what must have been a great track in its day.

Sydney Showground (speedway) due to noise issues, to walk up into the stands in that place and see it under lights was a special experience.

It is amazing how many tracks have disappeared over the years. If you download the link from here it shows almost all the current tracks and heaps of the old from all over the world. Speedway isn't done on it but you can always add your own.
Amazing what has been lost.

John Tetely (owner of Queensland Raceway) is the new owner/manager, he has done a lot of work to get it back up, I believe the only events they can run there are club events, but that is OK, at least there is somewhere.

Correction - Circuit OWNERS

There are no privately owned motor (road) racing circuits in Queensland.

Morgan Park is owned by the Warwick Council.

Lakeside Park is owned by the Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Queensland Raceway is owned by Ipswich City Council.

All the tracks are LEASED to operators by the owners.

Currently, two of the circuits are leased to a company/associated company controlled by John Tetley.

Perhaps one day he will control all three.

Bagot Road. We did get a replacement for it so it doesn't count really.

Yes spent many a Saturday night/Sunday morning at the Pits of Bagot Park from 1968 to the Cyclone T in 1974.

Had the pleasure of entering a demo derby at Hidden Valley, and attended a fair few more, as well as end of season meets and the like, back in the days when the place would be packed out, and even then the atmosphere wasnt all that flash. I know it got alot worse than that with maybe a hundred or so spectators at a meet. On the other hand, over on the drag strip during the same era the place was magical. The crowds were huge and you could back your ute up against the fence on the straight with a lounge chair in the back and a huge esky full to the brim... My point that I am getting to is that Darwin almost ended up without a speedway at one time about 4 years ago, and from what others have told me, the valley has never had the same ambience as Bagot Park. So if thread was started in 05 - 06 you very nearly could have added Northline Speedway.

No, really, why do we need more houses????

I don't know what you are all complaining about, now we have Adelaide, Homebush, Townsville, Albert Park, maybe a new track in Perth, plus our friends across the ditch have that great new track at Hamilton. And the general public can drive on most of those any time they want. Sheesh, some people are never happy.

I reckon Sandown is ok for now, as the horse racing track is not likely to be demolished in a hurry, although more severe usage restrictions could occur...

Calder is pretty likely to go, as there is massive urban expansion going on out there. Not to mention the circuit is in very poor condition, it's really only useful for drags, and that alone is gonna struggle to pay the bills.

Shoot, I forgot that we should all be grateful for the extra venues we have been so lucky to have provided for us.

peckstar has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I just had a friend over form UK and i can tell you the one thing he wanted to do while heer was go and see the GP track, which he was able to do without any issues, we did a few laps and he was wrapped. For some reason he wouldnt be able to do that at EC (assuming he had heard of it)
